I have picked up the AN78GS version. Do I need a Phenom to run it? Can someone also please recommend memory - do I need DDR2 1066? I need to run Bluray playback at 1080p.
You don't need a Phenom, but it no doubt helps. I'm going to use a 4850e - it's fine with the Asus for HDTV & I've read that people are using them for bluray fine (on AVS Forum).
1066 RAM will only be used at that speed with a Phenom. I've got some in mine, but it basically works as 800 as I've got a dual core.
Justin

FWIW, I now have stutter free Bluray playback working at 1080p with this board (AN78GS) running an Athlon 4200+ with 2GB DDR2 800. HDTV is also stutter free at 1080i.

Thanks Justin. I might stll get one. Just tried playing the Fifth Element on Blu-ray at 1080p24 at CPU was at about 65%. So I guess a Phenom might give me a bit more headroom. BY the way, I saw some comments about this board having 512Mbyte Video Ram capability and that is what I am running now. Couldn't get Blu-ray stutter free until I upped it to 512Mbyte. HDTV was bit wobbly until I did this too. Maybe Asus will release a BIOS update with this capability too?
Interesting post over on AVS about these boards having a faster version of the 8200 than other vendors (1500Mhz shader Clock vs 1200MHz). I have confirmed this with GPU-Z. Apparently the 8200s on these baords are more akin to a 8300.
