Need help - Mobo upgrade - No video output

Ok here is the problem.

I got a new Mobo "Intel DG33TL" and installed it into my media centre. I powered it up, the standby light came on, the CPU fan kicked in the hard drives fired, and then it just sits there.

No video output on either the VGA or DVI ports, no system beeps, nothing.

I checked a few thing and found that my old CPU was not supported by my new board, so $220 later I have gone and got a compatible CPU and installed it into the Mobo.

Still same problem occurs.

I have moved the BIOS jumpers to all setting but still nothing. My last build when so well, now I am stuck in the middle of this upgrade and I am down my beloved media centre.

Please give me some suggestions.

This is what is connected
Intel DG33TL
Intel ATX E6550 Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz 4mg cache 1333FSB LGA775
Maxtor 300g SATA II and Maxtor 320g SATA II HDD
Power supply 520w
2 x DDR2 1G RAM STICKS in DIMM 0 slots
Hauppauge Nova T-500 Duel TV Tuner in PCI slot

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

Re: Need help - Mobo upgrade - No video output

I think that is the same thing as switching the BIOS jumper to configuration mode. From what the mobo manual tells me that is the method to clear any passwords, but it still does not come up on the screen.

The mobo has no keyboard port and I have been using my remote for so long I do not have a USB keyboard. This would not cause there to be no video but (I think). At least there should be a no keyboard error or something.

Re: Need help - Mobo upgrade - No video output

I found this on the Intel site about clearing the CMOS

Certain changes in BIOS settings (such as chipset timing or latency, memory timing or latency, processor clock frequency, etc.) can cause a system to no longer boot.

If you are able to enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2, reset the BIOS to factory defaults by pressing F9. Save and exit the BIOS Setup.

If you cannot enter the BIOS Setup, clear the CMOS:
  1. Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the computer.
  2. Disconnect the computer’s power cord from the AC power source (wall outlet or power adapter).
  3. Remove the computer cover.
  4. Locate the battery on the board (see figure below).
  5. With a medium flat-bladed screwdriver, gently pry the battery free from its connector. Note the orientation of the “+” and “-” on the battery.
  6. Wait one hour then replace the battery.
  7. Replace the computer cover.
  8. Plug the computer and all devices back in.
You may also need to perform a BIOS Recovery after clearing the CMOS.

Seems awfully difficult to me, most boards I've used just have a jumper to clear it. But maybe this is the procedure you will have to use. The BIOS may have the settings of your old CPU still retained.

Re: Need help - Mobo upgrade - No video output

Thanks, will give that a try.

With there being no normal PS2 keybaord port on the new Mobo I assume I need a USB hard-wired (not IR) keyboard to be able to access CMOS at boot up? I had trouble with keyboards last build but at least the video worked to tell me no keyboard detected.

Re: Need help - Mobo upgrade - No video output

I think i have got it figured out now.

The new Mobo was not compatible with my old CPU. So I spent $220 on a new CPU.

Now it appears that my DDR2 was incompatible also, needing 800MHz, so another $120.

(found this out by removing the DDR2 and I then got an some error beeps so I knew the board was working. When i put it back in there was no beeps and power on self test.. A good looking over the Mobo specs show that I needed different DDR2 RAM)

I guess it goes to show that I was really luck when I did my first build not to have these problems and need to take a bit more care in researching a new Mobo's before buying.

I will get the new memory tomorrow and I hope that will be the end of it.

Also it looks as if the intel DG33TL on-board DVI output will not do 1080i, so there goes that idea. Some great media Mobo, not.
