Give up on USB ports - some advice

Hi all,
ive given up on getting my onboard usb ports to work. Ive managed to get the additional header ports to work, but i cannot get them to stay powered during standby mode. Ive tried all bios settings, mst, the hybernator, but nothing works. Im thinking of getting a PCI board with usb ports, but im not sure if these will have power when in standby so that i can turn on my mce with the remote. Has anyone done this before.

cheers,
juitz

Depending on the MB, have you also checked the jumpers. ? Some have 2 settings for USB..

Re: Give up on USB ports - some advice

Hi, I''ll relay my experiences I think they may help.

I have an i945 Gigabyte motherboard and LianLi case.

When I first put it all together everything started fine but when I shutdown I could not reboot the PC without disconnecting and reconnecting the mains power. I put up with this for a couple of weeks but knew something was wrong so resolved to fix it as suspend to RAM was not working either and I really wanted this (more for cooling issues than anything else).

Anyway after some study of the case wiring I found that although I had two sets of flying leads to the front USB ports they were infact merely jumpered together. This meant that I was infact commoning up the two USB headers on my motherboard. This would normally be bad enough but worse still (and I think the cause of my problems) the headers are not equivalent. One has power removed during power off or suspend (denoted USBGReeN on the motherboard), the other doesn't. This meant that I was effectively grounding the 5V supply whilst powered down.

Anyway the suggestion is, look at the header you're connecting to, it may be designed to have power removed during suspend or power off. Do not connect devices such as keyboards or mice with which you intend to wake up the pc to ports using these 'green' USB headers.

Cheers

John
