Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000

Post Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000

I have had the the Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000 2 weeks now and I have to say it is a absolute gem the design is like a notebook keyboard more than typical desktop keyboards. It is very thin and is comfortable to type on for extended periods. Microsoft included all of the media control keys including volume, pause/play and some Vista specific shortcuts for gadgets, WLM and Vista MCE. The keys have a nice notbook feel to them, which is good in my view. Rather than having normal function keys you get simple touch sensitive labels that act like standard keys when pressed.

What is cool is the touch sensitive direction pad that mimics the mouse movement allowing you to mouse around your computer without actually having to use the included mouse. The keys are the Microsoft comfort curve design, which takes getting used if you typically use a standard keyboard. Connectivity for the mouse and keyboard is good due to the 2.4 GHz Bluetooth that allows the keyboard to work easily from across the room. The laser mouse included works well and recharges via a flat charging tray. Shortcut keys for the Windows start button and Media Center start button are included as well. Above the touch sensitive F keys are also some additional hot keys you can map via software to applications or web sites of your choice.

Pros
  • Good wireless range
  • Integrated pointing deivce
  • Full media controls
Cons
  • Odd key layout makes for learning curve
  • Lack of standard Numeric pad
This is a great Step forward in the Media Centre keyboard market and Im looking forward to see the backlit Version (8000) that will be released later this year.

RRP: AU$249.95

I assume your's has a correct Austalian key layout - the one I got had a European layout, and includes all sort of strange & wonderful characters (including Ö, Ä, Å, £, ¤, §). I'm taking it back today.

The lack of a numeric keypad is a bit frustrating. It is much faster for entering numerical data with.

Re: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000

I finally got my keyboard replaced for one with the correct Australian layout.

But, I don't like the way the characters on the keys are some kind of decal reather than being properly molded into the plastic (the media control keys are OK, but the regular keys look like they've used stickers). I really hope they don't wear off after a while.

Re: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000

The integrated touch pad is the bomb. Just the excuse I was looking for (to throw the mouse off the couch).

Some of the buttons take some getting used to... for example the Windows button and the Media Center button. They do grow on you after a while.

The only thing this keyboard really lacks is intelligent backlighting of the keyboard. It's a bit difficult to type or change channels with the lights out / dimmed. I think there is another version of this keyboard that has that feature, but for the money I've got to say that I'm happy with what I bought.

No problem with letters on the keys, they all still look good - but I haven't had it long.

A couple of things I don't like: the position of the Esc key is non-standard, so trying to press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up Task Manager is a little tricky. Also the centre position for the windows key can be annoying (especially when trying to kit windows-pause to bring up System Properties).

Re: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000

I picked up of these the other day and like the response of the keyboard.

The lack of a numeric keypad is no major drama for light numeric work (pick up a USB number pad?). Another benefit is that it makes the keyboard more symmetrical therefore less RSI type injuries.
There are some odd choice for the keys, but if you wanted a standard keyboard there are to be had for $30....
