A little more info... SAMSUNG's Digital World - Hard Disk Drive

Just a taster...will let you in on more info as it comes to hand.

SEAGATE INFO

Seagate recently announced that it will launch no less than ten new hard drives ranging from pocket drives to high-end enterprise units, due to be shipped in Q3, informs TG Daily.

The manufacturer revealed some of the details regarding its new drives and it seems that it will increase the capacity featured by the latest 3.5" drives by adding 50%, from 500 GB to 750 GB.

Moreover, the manufacturer added that it will also release its first hybrid hard drive, a device which is developed ‘to merge’ the conventional hard disk storage technology with the latest flash memory.

Seagate’s hybrid hard drive - Momentus 5400 PSD - is said to be set for launching on the retail market at the same time as Microsoft’s Vista.
According to the web site’s editors, the new 2.5 inch hard drive is, in fact, an improved version of Seagate’s previous 5400rpm Momentus PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording technology) drive with a storage capacity of 160 GB.

Marc Jourlait, Seagate's vice president of segment marketing, stated in an interview for TG Daily that PMR technology will enable the manufacturers to develop enhanced storage solutions with a greater capacity, surpassing in this way ‘the Terabyte barrier’. Even if the terabyte hard drives are considered to be a revolution, Jourlait said that "will be common place in a year or two."

Also according to Jourlait’s statement, the PSD will be available in two versions – one that features 128 MB flash memory capacity, and the other - 256 MB, and, because of the new embedded technology, the battery operating time of a next-generation notebook will increase with up to 15%, meaning that the user will benefit from other 30 minutes of running time.

But Seagate isn’t the sole manufacturer to embrace the PRM technology, as the well-known storage devices producer Toshiba launched last year a single-platter 40 GB 1.8" drive, pursued by Seagate’s 160 GB 2.5" device, and then by Hitachi’s 160 GB 2.5" latest version. It seems that Toshiba will launch a 200 GB 2.5" hard drive, surpassing all the competitors.

The ST18 1.8" model and the 2.5" hybrid hard drive are due to launch in the first months of 2007. The manufacturer hasn’t revealed the prices for its upcoming products yet.
