WHS - Beyond The Vail

Todd Headrick, director of the Windows Home Server Team has advised that Microsoft is working on on a minor release of the Windows Home Server for release some time in 2009, and expect to provide a major new version, codenamed "Vail", in 2010 which will focus on making it a part of the Windows 7 family."

So far the only feature announced for Vail is support for Windows 7 Homegroups. Although you can back up a Windows 7 PC to a Home Server like any other PC and you can access shared files on a Home Server from Windows 7, today the Home server can't be part of a Homegroup.

That means files won't show up in libraries. As Windows general manager Mike Ybarra puts it, "We've had a great discussion over the last three months and the Homegroup team is very focused on making ... Read more...

Mmm - well I guess there'll be plenty of others like me that will be just delighted that their custom built 32bit WHS box will probably never join the Windows 7 "Homegroup" natively without a major rebuild!

Must have missed that bit in my excitement to build it!

People are always bad mouthing microsoft about keeping 32-bit OSes alive. Now when they do cut it out of one of their product lines you still do it???

Though, i'd say the real reason its been done is since the latest Server 2008 R2 is 64-bit only (IIRC) and i would expect Vail is based on it. Can't have a 32-bit child of a 64-bit parent OS.

First off - if you think that's me "bad-mouthing MS" - try and find a few more posts where I supposedly do that - they're few and far between.

I don't give a damn about 32bit vs 64bit OSes - what I do care about is that they release a 32 bit OS, then within 12 - 18 months of get it bug-fixed, announce that it'll be obsolete long before it's had a chance to get tired and old.

If the 64 bit OS was so important to their roadmap - why not hold back WHS 12 months and only release a 64 bit version from the get-go?

It's simply a really good example of grabbing a fistful of cash while the grabbing's good!

Why does a server that's meant for a home situation as a backup/media serving server need to be 64-bit anyway?

Eventually, as bloat will go on more that 4GB of RAM will be needed.
x64 platform is way more stable in server space - I know Running several clusters on 2003 x64 is a way to go for people like me. Less trouble, less downtime. Even for WHS. As a derivative from current leading OS flavour. 2003 R2 x64 Ent SP2 - is the most stable platform ever from MS. 2008 x64 R2 is the most promising.

Re: WHS - Beyond The Vail

im just saying that you can't make everyone happy.

if they had waited and relased vail as the first version wihch is only 64-bit, then there would be people complaining about it.

at-least this way there is a 32-bit edition out that can be used by people that don't have 64-bit compatible systems.

and im fairly sure its 18 months at least since WHS was relased...im 99% sure i was still working in retail (as i got it @ cost ).
IMHO, 18months (prolly closer ot 36 since the release of vail is in 2010) isn't a bad product life cycle IMHO. not as good as some others, but not bad either.

and there will be an update/service pack this year for WHS, which may or may not include some of the new features for Vail.

Re: WHS - Beyond The Vail

Why 64 bit?? Why not??

I must say that current 64bit releases are very promising for the future. I have been naively sceptical of 64 bit until the past few months. Am now convinced it's stable, MUCH more compatible with 32 bit apps than people realise, and having more than 4GB is just way cool. For example 99.5% of my 32 apps run without issue on 64bit Vista. Just one really old DOS program won't work, (other DOS programs run fine) and no drivers for a Canon Lide 20 scanner, but everything else so far no issue.

But I certainly agree that it's unfortunately largely due to Windows bloatware that we need more than 4GB in the first place for decent performance on many apps. (server and high-end MMedia app type needs aside of course).

Cheers
