High Definition TV with XP Media Center 2005

If you're ready for high definition entertainment, then XP Media Center Edition 2005 is for you. With a Media Center 2005 PC equipped with a High Definition TV (HDTV) Tuner1, you can enjoy HDTV on your PC monitor or anywhere in your home.

Understanding Digital TV (DTV) and High Definition TV (HDTV)

Get local TV broadcasts in DTV and HDTV quality up to 10 times that of standard TV signals.

Theater-quality audio

Enjoy booming bass and crystal clear 5.1 surround sound available with many primetime programs including movies and popular TV shows.

HD Personal Video Recording

Pause, rewind, and record local, over-the-air TV programs in HDTV just like you do standard TV programs.

Digital TV Programming Guide

Completely integrated into the Electronic Programming Guide2 (EPG) in Media Center 2005, local channels available in your area are easy to find with the new "DTV" icon.

Simple setup

Whether you're setting up a brand new Media Center PC with a digital tuner or adding an after-market solution to your existing PC, setup is a breeze. A built-in signal meter helps you tune your antenna for peak performance.3

So how do you get started?

Whether you're buying a new Media Center PC for the family or looking to make a digital entertainment upgrade, there are two options for you to add HDTV to compatible Media Center PCs — purchasing a new Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 system with built-in HDTV, or upgrading your existing Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 system with compatible HDTV hardware.

No matter what you choose, this three-step process will get you to HDTV:

Check that you can receive over-the-air HDTV in your area

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and DecisionMark have set up two easy-to-use Web sites at CheckHD and AntennaWeb where you can find information regarding HDTV availability in your area and what kind of antenna1 may be required. (If you want help, a number of professional installers can also be found locally by calling your HDTV retailer.)

Install Update Rollup #1 with HDTV support

Visit Windows Update and download Update Rollup #1 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with HDTV support. This software enables the HDTV support in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 when the appropriate hardware and drivers are installed.

WMVHD - High Definition on a Media Center PC

Even if HDTV isn't available in your area, you can still get a high definition experience with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Windows Media High Definition Video (WMV HD) makes it possible to watch stunning, high definition movies and Media Center PCs make the experience even better with remote control playback just like a traditional DVD player! Connect your PC to a high definition display such as a plasma television and a surround sound system for an incredible theater-like experience right in your home.

Pop a WMV HD DVD into your Media Center PC or download a WMV HD short from the Web. Watch WMV HD movies in your den or dorm, on your next plane ride, or in a Windows XP-based home theater.

To learn more about WMV HD DVDs or downloadable films, please visit the Windows Media High Definition Video Web site
