Microsoft backs HD-DVD with Managed Copy

Microsoft have announced that they will be supporting Toshiba's HD-DVD format.

Managed Copy – A First for DVDs is a guaranteed feature within HD DVD that gives consumers the freedom to make copies of their discs to a hard drive or home server, including Media Center PCs, and enjoy them in every room of the house over their home networks. HD DVD discs also will allow copies of the movie to be played on portable devices.

Re: Microsoft backs HD-DVD with Managed Copy

Do I hear the death of Blu-Ray??

It was always going to struggle given the need to re-tool all the DVD factories for Blu-Ray, while HD-DVD required only relatively minor changes to manufacturing plants... And by opening up some user rights to their own legally purchased content, people will feel it's a fair deal. Bring it on!!!

Cheers

Re: Microsoft backs HD-DVD with Managed Copy

This has been one of my concerns with MS, HD-DVD and their DRM implementation because since My Movies was created this is pretty much the only way I've watched DVDs. A fantastic development. If this is still possible to do with imported HD-DVDs (ie no region coding) without restrictions then I'll strike it off the list. That would make me a very happy camper.
