Sony Live Station Home Server

Sony have announced the Japanese release of their new home server PC, (VGF-HS1 & VGF-HS1S “Liblog Station”) which will launch on May 17th. The compact system is intended for use as a home server, with gigabit ethernet, support for the DLNA media sharing standard and a choice of either 1TB (HS1) or 1.5TB (HS1S) of storage.

Media can be either accessed on the home network or from a remote location either through a browser interface or via a pre-established “data link function” that makes a non-local device appear local.

The HS1 uses two 500GB drives while the HS1S uses two 750GB drives. Both have three USB ports, one front-mounted and two at the rear, as well as Memory Stick, SD/SDHC and Compact Flash slots. A single button-press can automatically copy all data from removable media to the Liblog itself.

Sony are claiming a maximum power draw of 30W and low-noise thanks to the use of two smaller fans rather than one large one. It weighs in at 3.1kg and measures 270 x 71 (diameter x height). The HS1 will be priced at around 60,000 yen ($570 USD) while the HS1S will come in at 80,000 yen ($761 USD).

Hmm..Very nice but since when have 2 smaller fans been quieter than 1 larger one?? Smaller fans need higher revs to move the same amount of air as a larger one and this produces noise and usually more unpleasant high pitched noise than a larger fan. More likely they couldn't get a bigger one in there and they added a bit of spin (pardon the pun) to make it sound like some sort of innovation.

It's a Sony. Good point Mysteron Why not 10 very small fans - it will sound like a mosquito

Re: Sony Live Station Home Server

Maybe it's me, but I just don't get it.

I can't imagine the need for a tiny, trendy PC "server" sitting in my lounge looking all pretty & cool. Mine is a bloody big mother with eight HDDs buried deep in the bowels of the house, hopefully almost un-noticeable so that if someone does break in, they'll won't find it and be able to deprive me of all my precious data.

With the pretty little tin can above, it'd be easier to pick up that the media center box itself - then what good are the backups you've been doing for 6 months?

Like I said - maybe it's just me.

It runs a DLNA server so basically its Sony's own first entry Media Server for the PS3/PSP.

Exactly Mike, very appealing to the eyes and damn easy to carry, for over two decades I've seen just how easy it is for villains to empty somone's life, what they don't steal they often just smash. It will no doubt appeal to some and look rather trendy sitting in the AV unit but with a decent music and movie library even 1.5 Tb ain't enough these days!

Re: Sony Live Station Home Server

Hehe.. Funny how when MS tried to release exactly the same product it was titled

Cool WHS Design Concept

Even though the consensus then was also "Why would you want that in the lounge for thieves to steal"...

Personally I think this one looks much nicer than the MS effort (and it exists!) and would be a nice addition in my office plugged straight into my switch. (Not necessarily in plain sight).

Being Sony you could actually expect it to work too

Cheers,

Arkay.
