Microsoft has today again released Service Pack 1 for Vista and Service Pack 3 for Windows XP users. Both updates should now be available via both Windows Update or Automatic Updates. The company had been expected to release them several weeks ago, but deferred at the last minute due to a compatibility problem with one of their lesser known products, Microsoft Dynamics RMS, which is a management software application used by small to medium-sized retail businesses.
The Windows XP SP3 update, which is the final such update for the soon-to-be-retired operating system, is available through every system’s Windows Update feature. It can also be downloaded directly through Microsoft’s official online Download Center.
While downloads of both XP SP3 and Vista SP1 have now resumed, the hiccup itself has not actually been resolved. Specifically, Microsoft has placed a filter on the service packs so that Dynamics RMS customers are protected by not being able to install the problematic update(s).
Microsoft has said it is currently working on a full fix for the compatibility issue, which it expects to have ready before the close of May. The software giant has also urged Dynamics RMS customers already running XP SP3 or Vista SP1 to get in contact with Microsoft Customer Support for more information.
