Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

It's been a long wait, but here it is, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available and addresses feedback from Microsoft customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards. Microsoft claim that SP1 will make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista.

The Windows Vista Service Pack 1 "Five Language Standalone" version can be installed on systems with any of the following language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional).

You should now be able to download SP1 from windows update or you can access the stand-alone packages from the following links.

32bit Package (434.5 MB) (x86)

64bit package (726.5 MB) (x64)

Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

Note the "read me before installing notes" :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs:
- The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x86 is 65 MB (compared to 450 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
- The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x64 is 125 MB (compared to 745 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).

- Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible.

- Some Windows Vista users may encounter an issue with a small set of hardware devices that may not function properly after updating a Windows Vista PC to Windows Vista SP1. This is an issue with the way the device drivers were re-installed during the Windows Vista SP1 update process, not with the drivers themselves—these drivers worked on Windows Vista RTM and they work on Windows Vista SP1. This problem is typically corrected by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. We are working with the manufacturers of these devices to get the known problematic drivers and their install programs updated, and also on other solutions we can use to ensure a smooth customer experience when updating to Windows Vista SP1 using Windows Update. For new PCs provisioned with Windows Vista SP1, this is not an issue.

- If you choose to install Windows Vista SP1 via the standalone installer available on the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft advises that you first visit Windows Update and install all optional drivers. Read Knowledge Base Articles 948187 and 948343 for more information.

- If you have a prior version of the Windows Vista SP1 beta installed, you must uninstall it prior to installing the final version. Use the Control Panel applet "Programs and Features" and select "View installed updates" from the top left of the task pane. Under Windows, look for "Service Pack for Windows (KB936330).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The point about some users having problems is true - I've heard Microsoft found some troublesome hardware too late to change for SP1 release, so Windows Update will not list it if your hardware doesn't have specific drivers installed. If you load the standalone installer on, you may have issues.

Regards,
Shane.

That's because it's not released on Windows Update yet.

It is for me - just downloaded and installed it.

All went well and already everything feels a little quicker - maybe it's my imagination just like the car goes better after a good detail

Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

It is available via Windows Update if your PC meets the criteria. One of mine is okay and I have downloaded and installed successfully. The other has a driver issue so it does not show up (yet)

Nope - it ain't my imagination!

Just moved some large files to my WHS box, I used to struggle to achieve 10 MB/s and more often than not it gradually slowed to around 4 MB/s by the end of the transfer.

With SP1 installed, transfers screams through at between 33 MB/s (slowest at the start) up to 43 MB/s. Also once top speed has been reached, unlike pre-SP1, the transfer speed remains constant until completed.

Happy Jan!

My experiences are pretty much identical to that.

Also, the progress meter used to only update every 10 seconds or so, now it's a constant accurate figure. Obviously it doesn't help with the actual speed, but it makes you feel better.

My Experience with SP1

Hi all I have been putting it off for several weeks but I decided today to install SP1 Stand Alone gold code on my very Stable Media Centre. It took a long time to get it to this point so any change to my system I am always very worried about what might happen.

On a positive note the upgrade was very smooth took about 45 mins and at the end the media Centre came up and all looked good. For a minute there I was actually very impressed of how smooth it had gone but it didnt take long for me to loose that warm and fuzzy feeling.

I have the Dvico DVB-T duel head tuner and in the past have experienced some of the problems I have seen others document error code 10 etc. But that was a while ago and all have been good for a few months.

Well not any more

I now only have one tuner head available in media centre. I looked in device manager and the two heads are there looking good device working normally. No errors or Warnings
ok I can live with this for a day until my girl friend wants to watch some crap that I hate and then I am going to be stuck watching dancing and reality TV.

Next EPG in Sydney has been working great since my media centre went in.
Well not any more. Channel 2 seemed to be fine but all other channels had ? marks and I have seen the article on the Reg Keys to change and no it didnt help.

Si I went and remapped the guide Channel 10 and 7 started to work better and some of the programs came up. But Channel 9 had a few things displaying but most were ? marks.
So after messing around for about an hr and not really getting anywhere I decided to go outside and ride my bike. I was gone for about 2 hours when I got back I had another look at the Progam Guide and to my delight a lot of the Channels had returned. I was happy until the 7am Morning show started to record and its 7pm ..... WTF...

I noticed the program guide is now 12 hours out of sync. So I did a quick sanity check to check my computers system clock. Its time synced so I didnt expect a miracle even if it is easter sunday. So the EPG is now toast.

I have 2 decisions to make now do I go back to pre SP1 or do I have a week of pain to fix these problems.

hope someone has some answers. The tuner issue is a bit of a concern because I havent seen this one before where it all looks good in device manager but doesnt work in MCE. Is there a easy way to debug this..

I advise anyone thinking of upgrading to take their time and make sure you have a backup of your current system, Before you make your move. It disapoints me that these problems sneak through BETA testing. I have a very standard Hardware config nothing out of the ordinary so I would have thought that these issues should not happen.

Cheers
Phil

Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

Hey Hamster - I did the same thing and upgraded to SP1 this morning via 434Mb standalone from link above. My EPG (epgstream) is also 12hrs out of synch.

UPDATE: As well as correcting my spelling - the EPG issue was an EpgStream EPG data issue and has been corrected - completely unrelated to the SP1 update.
