Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

My Experience with SP1

Hi all I have been putting it off for several weeks but I decided today to install SP1 Stand Alone gold code on my very Stable Media Centre. It took a long time to get it to this point so any change to my system I am always very worried about what might happen.

On a positive note the upgrade was very smooth took about 45 mins and at the end the media Centre came up and all looked good. For a minute there I was actually very impressed of how smooth it had gone but it didnt take long for me to loose that warm and fuzzy feeling.

I have the Dvico DVB-T duel head tuner and in the past have experienced some of the problems I have seen others document error code 10 etc. But that was a while ago and all have been good for a few months.

Well not any more

I now only have one tuner head available in media centre. I looked in device manager and the two heads are there looking good device working normally. No errors or Warnings
ok I can live with this for a day until my girl friend wants to watch some crap that I hate and then I am going to be stuck watching dancing and reality TV.

Next EPG in Sydney has been working great since my media centre went in.
Well not any more. Channel 2 seemed to be fine but all other channels had ? marks and I have seen the article on the Reg Keys to change and no it didnt help.

I noticed the program guide is now 12 hours out of sync. So I did a quick sanity check to check my computers system clock. Its time synced so I didnt expect a miracle even if it is easter sunday. So the EPG is now toast. I have since discovered this had nothing to do with the SP1 update it was related to a problem at FreeEPG over easter
See link for details

The tuner issue is a bit of a concern because I havent seen this one before where it all looks good in device manager but doesnt work in MCE. Is there a easy way to debug this..

I have since found the solution to this shutdown and power off your Media Centre at the wall then restart it. Problem went away.

I advise anyone thinking of upgrading to take their time and make sure you have a backup of your current system, Before you make your move.

I have now resolved all the issues media centre is working well.
Cheers
Phil

Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

I think it is a pure coincidence....

If it helps I have just installed SP1 on one media centre pc and not on the other one but both have the 12 hour sync problem with free EPG therefore my guess is that it was just freak timing. I have changed one to Oztivo and it the guide is working perfectly again. I do NOT think it has anything to do with installing SP1.

Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

This was an EpgStream data issue see: http://forum.epgstream.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=190

If you update your guide it should be fixed this morning.

Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

I'd love to install SP1, but windows update will never show SP1 available for me to download.

Why?

Well a bit of digging and it seems that I have a system that is not compatible with SP1, well one component in particular. My creative soundblaster audigy. To be even more exact file p17.sys.

MS have flagged this file as incompatible with sp1. At this time they have been no new drivers for my/this sound card since March last year. And it doesn't seem to be going to happen anytime soon, if not at all. Sure there are new compatible drivers for the X-Fi series soundcards, but why should I fork out money for a more expensive card, when I only listen to music and the clicks and beeps the Pc makes. The creative forums really have no information on this at all. Am I the only one with this card? Surely not!

Sure there maybe hacks and workarounds, but why should I goto the trouble of doing that, when it should just work for the "average user".

Pull your finger out creative, and get the whips cracking Microsoft. I'm not using old or outdated hardware, I'm using a soundcard that is still available at retail.

Evently MS will force everyone to update to SP1, I'll be ready, I really hope creative are!

With SP1 installed, transfers screams through at between 33 MB/s (slowest at the start) up to 43 MB/s. Also once top speed has been reached, unlike pre-SP1, the transfer speed remains constant until completed.

Happy Jan!
Woot!!! Newflash!!!! After 4 years of development, 1 year of beta testing and 10 months of production retail usage MS finally achieve a network transfer rate beyond that of a C=64.....

Wow Legends......

Cheers,

In my experience Creative have always been one of the slowest manufacturers to release updated drivers for their products and that's if they ever do. They are not renowned for supporting their older hardware in new environments and that's one of the reasons why I stopped buying their products some time ago.

Re: Windows Vista SP1 Now Available

Has anyone else tried to install it to find that it complains that only a few languages are supported (including English) and their PC is running an unsupported language? Does anyone know how I would go about uninstalling any other language packs I might have?

Matty - not sure if this helps, but I stumbled across this info just now and it reminded me of your Audigy plight.

It appears these drivers are home-brewed, but they might be worth a look.
