HDTV With Embedded Media Center Extender

HP is rolling out a slew of new Media Center PCs and media extender devices. First up, HP is rolling out a couple of HDTVs with embedded media center extender capabilities. The SL4282N & SL4782N TVs both work as V2 extenders, meaning you'll be able to stream content across your home network from your Windows Vista PC tucked away somewhere else in the house.

The 42" and 47" TVs feature 1080p displays plus other features as follows:

- Native 1080p panel (with HP's Visual Fidelity Engine)
- 500cd/m² brightness, 2000:1 contrast ratio, 176° viewing angle, 6ms response, 3:2 pulldown
- (3) HDMI, (2) component, (2) composite / S-Video, (1) VGA
- Integrated 802.11a/b/g/n, Ethernet
- Front speakers now NXT
- Functions as a MCE, playing back DivX, XviD, H.264, MPEG-2, and WMV (also has HP's media interface)
- Built-in ATSC and clear-QAM tuners

If you already have a MediaSmart HDTV, HP is offering a software update that will upgrade your device to function as a V2 extender. The update also supports additional media codecs.

For those just looking for an extender to stick next to your TV and don't need a whole new television set, HP has also got the MediaSmart Receiver. The MediaSmart Receiver does the usual MCE business (actually, it's an Extender for Windows Media Center, meaning it can do DivX and XviD), in addition to playing H.264, MPEG-2, AAC, having built-in 802.11a/b/g/n, a Pocket Media Drive bay, and all the outputs you'll need to get the thing up and running (component, HDMI with HDCP). And, of course, it'll stream you media via DLNA / UPnP servers, play it off the drive or USB ports, as well as switching modes o HP's own media interface, just in case you're not into the Extender experience (or don't rely on an XP or Vista box to deal with your media). No pricing intel just yet, but expect a spring release. Of course, if you wanted to get a small Media Center Extender with a hard drive, USB, and high def outputs, there are a few decent alternatives out there.

Re: HDTV With Embedded Media Center Extender

That does look sweet. I can see plenty of people being happy with 2000:1 contrast ratio for a secondary TV but I'm not sure I'd be interested in it for a primary panel given that these days the better LCD panels are more like around 20000 or 25000:1.

The MediaSmart Receiver on the other hand looks like it might be worth a look when it hits our shores although it does lack a High Definition (BluRay/HD-DVD) Disk option which will be high on my shopping list when I look for an extender for the bedroom.

Contrast ratio specs are unreliable at best. However that 2000:1 figure is the more meaningful and reliable static contrast ratio, instead of the nonsense 20000:1 dynamic ratios that LCD manufacturers now specify in a shameless attempt to fool consumers that they are competitive with plasmas. As a comparison the Sony Bravia X has a static ratio of 2200:1.

Samsung play the game more than some. I haven't been to their site for a while, but the last time I did, they omitted static figures altogether, and only specified dynamic. That's not to say that their LCDs aren't any good though.

Even if all the manufacturers specified static figures, it still wouldn't help much because there is no formal independent verification to ensure that the figures are meaningful or to ensure that they have been measured using identical methods.

So, much like video standards, it's buyer beware.

Quoting panel contrast ratios on the panel alone means very little on the "F" series Samsungs, these incorporate a "film" over the screen that manages to greatly enhance the blacks to near plasma levels while at the same time letting all the "on" pixels through without effecting the brightness at all. I'm sure someone here will call that "cheating" but at the end of the day .... it looks FANTASTIC!!!!!

Yeah but why would you want a whole media centre?

I cant wait for these new models to arrive - I think it is a great idea.
Reduced cabling and clutter - just need network and power (or just power if using wireless).
Finally be able to get rid of the xbox 360 jet engine.
Have something quiet for the bedroom.
Even have the option of putting an extended tv where there isnt any cabling if the wireless streaming works ok.
Bring em on.
Coma.

Re: HDTV With Embedded Media Center Extender

Here's a link to a video demoing the extenders

http://www.microsoft.com/winme/0709/...igitalLife.asx

From memory, it includes a HP MediaSmart TV.

Note: Im not sure how well this link will play for you. I've been having trouble getting it to play, but its working for others I've talked to.

because then your not limited to the power of one computer and its tuners etc if you were to have more then 1 of these extenders in the house... There is already 360's that extend and i find the experience ok but not as good as the main VMC machine.

The future will be the PS3 imho

Re: HDTV With Embedded Media Center Extender

Is there an announcement for availability in Australia? HP have been making TV's for a while pretty much only available in the US. They've had consumer level LCD's and a 50" plasma for ages available in the US?

Re: HDTV With Embedded Media Center Extender

Pardon my ignorance, but will these Extenders also be able to stream media from a Windows Home Server?

cheers,
Allan H.

I can't see a problem doing that - especially given the DivX etc. support
