The ability to play and stream DivX and XviD videos has been a long-requested feature for Xbox 360 owners and Media Center Users, but for many years it seemed as if this feature would never arrive. However, following rumours of XviD Microsoft deal, DivX CEO Kevin Hell recently hinted at a possible future for his company’s codec on the 360. During the SMid Cap conference call with investment firm JP Morgan, Hell was asked if the recent deal that will see DivX codec’s shipped with new versions of Microsoft's standalone Media Center Extenders means that such support will also be arriving on the Xbox 360. "Yes!" was his immediate reply, although he quickly qualified that confirmation with a disclaimer that the deal was still in the negotiation process and had not yet been finalized.
The Updated is expected before Christmas in the 360’s Fall Update, all though Microsoft is being typically secretive with details regarding the Xbox 360 fall update, Microsoft a few days ago confirmed a new feature for the 360 called “Family Timer” and the only reason they confirmed the Family Timer is because it had already been leaked onto the internet. But the twice-yearly dashboard updates typically add a range of new functionality, from small usability tweaks to major functionality enhancements and maybe DivX support is one of them.
User requests my ass, what it took was seeing Sony make the same approach to license Divx. In the latest 2.0 firmware update, divx files were now viewable in the directory tree (not playable just yet) via "search for media server", USB and local hard disk.
Microsofts own table specifically states that Divx will not be available when running the Xbox 360 in extender mode, and the reason would be more 'political' than anything else.. Microsoft just didnt want to upset hollywood to much!
Uunfortunaltly switching the media extender off and going back into the regular Xbox interface just to play a divx file is not acceptable. (for me anyway)

oh its not that big a deal. Yeah its silly that it doesn't, but we are just speculating and lets remember at least the 360 has the nice MCE interface. not so bad if I have to revert back to PS3 style xvid watching
Xbox 360 update is scheduled for tomorrow @ 9pm.
The following interesting line is mentioned (courtesy of smarthousenews.com.au):
New Video Features – The new patch will also support full-screen movie previews and will come with an enhanced video codec to expand the 360's entertainment options.
Could it be?
Nooo, surely not!
I pray, ohh how I pray for xvid support!
Havent bothered searching any further, we will see what tomorrow eve holds!
