October 2007 Cumulative Update for Vista Media Center

A new cumulative update package for Windows Vista Media Center has been released this week. This update is called the October 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista and is also known as KB941229. It is available for download in x86 and x64 versions.

The October 2007 Cumulative Update includes the following fixes:
  • All of the fixes previously included in the June 2007 Cumulative Update
  • An issue that affects digital cable card components when you use Scientific Atlanta cable cards
  • Interaction issues that occur between a Windows Vista Media Center PC and an Xbox 360 that is being used as a Media Center extender
  • Autolaunch issues that can occur with video CD (VCD) media
  • Several bug fixes for the Media Center platform to help Media Center applications (in addition to the ones previously available in the June 2007 Cumulative Update)

Re: October 2007 Cumulative Update for Vista Media Center

OK, Scenerio is:

Allowed windows update to go overnight, installed the updates and rebooted OK.

Then I looked at what was installed and what wasn't, then downloaded and installed the following updates (KB941229, KB938126, KB941649 and KB941600 (x64 edition)) without rebooting inbetween. Rebooted the machine and it failed to reboot.

Tried last know good config, also failed,

tried safe mode and also failed.

Seached the net and found some other users with same problems and had to restore from a backup (could not repair the installation).

So will try a repair and see what happens. bloody M$ft.

So moral is, try them one at a time (if you think you need to) and backup before installing.

Re: October 2007 Cumulative Update for Vista Media Center

Ok managed to do a repair using the installation disk. Required two attempts and it used a restore point from last night to get it to work. Now redoing the windows update then I will create a backup and then think about the other updates.

Update: KB941600 installed and rebooted OK
KB941229 installed and rebooted OK

That will be me until later on when I have more time.

Unfortunately I do not have a xbox so can't comment on the extender performance, I just like to ensure everything is kept up to date.

Re: October 2007 Cumulative Update for Vista Media Center

OK tried the KB941649, you know the one that increases the reliability and stability of Vista, well it was pretty reliable at not starting and quite stable at it!!!

So I narrowed down my problem KB941649 would not boot up, had to use the repair function on the installation disc and restore the computer to an earlier time. So I will leave this hotfix for quite a while.

On boot up in safe mode it got stuck on loading crcdisk.sys and would not go any further. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Not sure if I got this update but Vista Media Centre extender AKA XBox360 is loading Media Centre interface much quicker at the moment, I had noticed it start to take a long time and was thinking I might have to do a fresh install but...crisis averted. Although I am too scared to reboot the machine now and not sure if it is set to reboot when required, basically I have not had the need to touch the system in a while and not sure I want to as I like the fact that it just sits and works for the moment. I have too much else going on to worry about it right now as it is working well.

Re: October 2007 Cumulative Update for Vista Media Center

I had two prior problems with Vista media center.

1. No native support for hybrid tuners. If you're card is digital and analogue, it can only recognize/read one or the other, but not both, even separately. The fix is to manually edit the registry a lot then it works fine, but freezes if you record analogue/digital at the same time. So you have to be careful.

2. No support for sub-channels guide listings. For example, 4-2 will list the programs of 4-1, eventhough they are two separate channels. To record, enter channel/time manually, Have fun! Not.l=

Has these been fixed? They are atrocious and irritating.
