Voice Control Your MCE

A voice recognition system from One Voice Technologies allows users to control home entertainment experiences through Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 without a remote.

“Play Fellowship of the Ring.” Is it your dream to have a voice activated, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 powered home entertainment system? That’s the idea behind One Voice Technologies’ new Media Center Communicator product.

One Voice said today they had launched a sales campaign of their voice recognition product at select CompUSA retail outlets to test the viability of the Media Center Communicator on physical store shelves (it is already available online). If all goes as planned, they expect a full product roll out by the busy holiday shopping season.

Media Center Communicator allows users to speak voice commands through an open air microphone to their Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 system. Multiple voice navigation options exist, including instructing the computer to play music, video and digital image content, commence instant messaging conversations, send and receive email and begin PC to Phone calling.

"Media Center Communicator is the perfect product for anyone that owns an iPod, Zen or other MP3 players, owns a digital camera, records live TV, owns a plasma or LCD TV or simply is looking for the ultimate digital entertainment experience!" said Dean Weber, President and CEO of One Voice.

Cost to ship to Australia is $184.95 USD including PPH.

NB - we know that this product has been around for a while but it seems to be on the improve - to see a pretty impressive demonstration - go to http://www.onev.com/videos/mccoverview.wmv

Re: Voice Control Your MCE

Hmmm, a little staged and edited me thinks.

I wonder if it works that well given a bit of distance from the microphone and kids running around and other background noise. I would be very frustrating if you had to say everything 2 or 3 times.

I am yet to see a voice recognition system that works well without having to speak very deliberately and a bit louder than you would normally speak which makes you feel like a dickhead when other people are around.

But I am one who absolutely hates those call centre voice recognition systems (am I the only one?)

Novelty ?

I'd certainly would want to try it before spending the $$$ And an addon in similar price to the cost of MCE itself - It would want to be pretty damn good !

Interesting thought,

If you play a homemovie recording of yourself controlling MCE with voice how will it react?

Re: Voice Control Your MCE

I purchased this software a few months ago..... as a matter of fact, I found out about it from a post on this site! (Voice Control for MCE2005 - follow the link)

When I bought it, I thought that having a mic sitting near the PC with me 2-3m away would probably not work well, and not wanting to run a usb cable across the room to position the mic where it needed to be, I also got a bluetooth headset to use with it.

While the recognition software is good - it does not need training and can recognise any voice, however it was sluggish at best and at times, a down right pain! – much faster to just grab the remote!

It also caused my computer to react extremely slowly - took 20-40seconds to go back to desktop when closing Media Centre, and was generally sluggy.

Of corse, this could be a problem with my system but I am running a P4 2.98Ghz with 1gb RAM. (and yes, I did also try it with the bundled mic).

After about a month of trying to get it working properly, I gave up and uninstalled it. Now its just another one of those boxes collecting dust.
