Finally - A Free EPG For Australia

It looks like Christmas has come early this year.

TV broadcasters agree to share programme listings information - after months of wrangling and negotiations, Australia’s free-to-air broadcasters have finally agreed to the development of electronic programme guides for digital services.

Commercial broadcasters will make their programme guides available to manufactures of set top boxes, personal video recorders and other service providers. The agreement was secured by Free TV Australia, the industry body that represents the commercial broadcasters.

Julie Flynn, CEO at Free TV Australia, said the development is a significant advance for the industry. But privately, Free TV has been annoyed by the length of time it has taken for the deal to be struck, with some networks showing reluctance to take part.

"Free-to-view digital television is an open platform – available to every household in Australia. In the same spirit, we believe all consumers should be able to access our electronic program information,” Flynn said.

"Following our announcement today, any EPG service provider will be able to receive our data and make it available on a range of retail consumer equipment.

"Free TV members acknowledge widespread availability of electronic program information is a critical plank in the transition to digital television, and today's announcement is a major step forward."

From the Free TV media release:

"In what will be a major boost to the take-up of free-to-view digital TV, commercial broadcasters will
make their program listing information available to manufacturers of set top boxes, personal video
recorders (PVRs) and other service providers provided the equipment displaying the EPG
complies with some base level requirements designed to protect copyright, protect the integrity of
the program information and facilitate collection of ratings information.
"

Wonder what that means?

Justin

Well I was glad I did at the time but I'm not so sure any more since I now have about 15 months of paid subscription to a soon-to-be-free service!

This is great news and about time too! According to this article it will be available in 3 months time : http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...76-643,00.html
Which is good timing because my current IceTV sub ends in September. I just hope they provide separate guides for the HD channels like Ice does...

Doh! I just became happy with my Ice subscription again as this new option won't be available for MCE since one of the conditions of provision is that the device must not allow advert skipping!
