Windows Easy Transfer Companion (Beta)

Windows Easy Transfer Companion enables you to automatically transfer your most important programs from your Windows XP-based PC to your new Windows Vista-based PC. The software will move more than 100 of the most popular programs, as well as many others that you may have installed. You have complete control over selecting which programs to transfer, so only the programs you care about will move. The software will alert you if some programs may not be able to transfer, or may not transfer with high confidence. Most security software is not able to transfer due to technical reasons.

Easy Transfer Companion is designed to be used in addition to Windows Easy Transfer—which is part of Windows Vista and automatically transfers your data and settings. Connecting your two computers can be done with either an Easy Transfer Cable (available online, from retailers, and from PC manufacturers), or a home or small business network. If using an Easy Transfer Cable, you must first install Windows Easy Transfer on your Windows XP-based PC. By using Easy Transfer and Easy Transfer Companion you will be able to quickly and easily setup your new PC with all the data, settings, and programs that matter to you, so you can be productive on your new PC right away.

System Requirements
  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows Vista; Windows XP
  • Two physical PCs. The old PC must be running Windows XP SP2 and the new PC must be running Windows Vista – both in U.S. English.
  • Both PCs must be connected via an Easy Transfer Cable or LAN.
  • At least 200MB of free disk space.
  • Must be run as a user with Administrator rights.
Easy Transfer Companion only transfers programs from a Windows XP-based PC to a Windows Vista-based PC. Easy Transfer Companion is currently in Beta, and only available for the US market.**

** My PC is set for Australia but I was still able to download it.

Interesting. I hope someone is using these apps MS churns out... because they could be using those dev teams to refine and release something far more important, like softsled

Re: Windows Easy Transfer Companion (Beta)

If the OS wasn't so obfuscated in the first place it'd be a simple matter of loading a new OS and pointing it at your existing, unchanged, application partition and/or data volume.

The fact that they needed to write something special to allow this sort of 'ease of use' just serves to prove how not easy to use windows really is...

What about the other 350,000 windows apps?

Cheers,

Arkay.

Re: Windows Easy Transfer Companion (Beta)

I have just added a new mediacentre pc running vista home premium with 4 GB RAM. Only 3GB is recognized by vista because i'm using the 32 version!!

I have had endless trouble getting the new mediacentre to work. Initially all went well then one day when booting, vista was frozen on a black screen with only the cursor showing. sent pc back to supplier. i\they re-installed Vista de-novo- lost all my programs and had to re-intal everything. then my tv tuner, Aver TV played up - sometimes no sound, sometimes no picture. recorded music. will not play. re-installed vista again - upgrade only this time. still no sound. TV tuner now not recognized.

PC is back with the vendors. Hopefully I will get it back tomorrow all in working order.

if i experienced so mcuh problems with installing everthing anew, what chance do i have of not getting into problems if i were to trans files (many, many files and applications) from my old PC Pentium 4 2 GB RAM and running XP professional. Do i dare risk transferring????

Re: Windows Easy Transfer Companion (Beta)

i've tried the easy transfer cable between "old"xp and "new" vista to transfer some programs. because i was transferring programs i also downloaded windows easy transfer companion onto BOTH computers. xp ran beautifully got to the point of saying 'connecting to new computer' then nothing. new computer tells me(computer says no! lol) that the companion inly supports us english?? questions i have are, do i need windows easy transfer companion on the "new" computer? and can i change ?computer language settings to be us-english(i hope it's not this simple or i'll feel like a right knob)
cheers
