Cool WHS Design Concept

Here are a few pics of Microsoft's Windows Home Server reference design to get your hardware juices flowing.

The glowing hockeypuck has a diameter of about 9", with LEDs that glow on the bottom which are intended to map to the overall health of your home network - green is healty, yellow is "failing", and red is "uh-ohh!".

Microsoft advise that no one has taken up their offer to turn the prototype into a production unit, although the Sony VAIO VGX-TP1 running WHS comes close.

The outer shell is smoked plexiglass which apparently scratches way too easily. The inner shell is machined aluminum polished to a chrome appearance with a "shadow" of the "Windows Home Server" logo on it. The rear panel has power, Ethernet and USB as well as a recovery button.

I saw the pic of that from one of the trade shows... of course, its just a protoype but it was a working prototype - I wonder how many HDDS it could fit in there...where the fan is, if its made out of notebook parts etc.... The HP mediasmart server has been reported to have a 1GHz CPU....I hope they up that a little

still, there is some prettiness about it, I must admit. I love things that glow

The question you have to ask yourself is why would you make something so stylish just to get tucked under the stairs, in the roofspace, in the garage etc. And for those that are a little more serious about a WHS rig....where would you attach the rackmount ears?

I probably shouldnt be saying this... but it really reminds me of one of those robot vacuum cleaners. I think the light changes when the bag gets full...

I couldn't agree more!

I have WHS stuck in a far remote corner of my garage, camouflaged under a pile of crap - this (hopefully) means that if my house does get broken into and my main PC(s) get nicked - my data is safe.

But if I used this little prima donna for primary backup - it'd be gone along with everything else

Possibly because the ma and pa people that would be buying the ready built appliance from retailers would not be tucking the thing away in an unused part of the house - it would be sitting on the computer desk in the study or lounge room where the router is situated.

The type of people buying these things (not people like us buying OEM software and building our own server) aren't going to be running 20 metre Ethernet cables through the ceiling, or getting patch panels installed in every room.

Yeah I know the type, I did a service call a few weeks back and got a modem/router/wifi going for an older couple. Apparently the ONLY place they could put it was on the floor next to the kitchen table. got a call from them the very next day saying they couldn't connect to the internet anymore today, being just down the road I walked over and yep sure enough no modem/router sitting on the floor, instead it was neatly packed away in its box and stored in the garage. When I quized them about it the woman replied, oh that thing, the wires were too messy so she put it away but could I please get them back on the internet without it since they "already connected" yesterday.

Man if that particular WHS box actually made it to market, I'd expect to walk into a house one day and find a crochet doyle covering it up as it sat on the mantle piece hummung and glowing away.
