Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

Are you sure it's actually learnt it in the first place? My keyboard hasn't forgotten its learnt volume signals. I just can't get the keyboard to learn the TV power signal in the first place.

Yep - it learns the signal fine and I am able to use the power button successfully (for a while at least). I haven't tried programming the volume controls yet, so I'm not sure if they have the same problem.

The mouse-pointer is actually horrible to use!
Personal opinion - would've been better with a built in trackball mouse.
Pity there is no "eject" button, like a CE appliance.

I agree, although I'm quite comfortable with the stick now.

Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

I've found using the stick to be very easy now - just takes a little getting used to.

I've installed one of these keyboards in a hotel to run their lobby plasma display and the staff have come to grips with it quite quickly after I showed them that it's easier to rock the middle part of your thumb over it than it is to control with your thumb's tip (which most people seem to attempt to do the first time). After some play, they are now using the keyboard over the normal mouse on a regular basis now (which kinda surprised me somewhat - I left the mouse there expecting people to always use that instead).

Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

I must admit - I'm liking it more and more... although the wife still can't get the mouse pointer working right.

I still get a bit of a jerky response from the mouse - but according to Mike this may be a known issue and hopefully an update will come out to improve...

All in all - I'm very happy with it... now I've just gotta get my new Harmony remote...

Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

I personally have never experienced this erratic mouse issue that a lot of people have described, and that's with three keyboards now. I find the motion and mistake ratio to be no different to that of a notebook joystick.

HI all,

I've had the MCE keyboard for a couple of weeks now and have the hang of the mouse thingie. It certainly does take a bit of getthing used to. perceverance pays! Altough a touch pad would probable work much better IMHO!

Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

Now that I have the reciever in line of sight, the mouse works fine. When it was out of sight it was impossible, but I am now happy and disconnected my other mouse.

What a fine bit of kit. It works for me...

I suspect the idea behind going the joystick route was less to break. A trackball can get dirty, especially in a lounge where people might be eating food and watching movies.

A touchpad can get dirty and less responsive too if the contact behind it separates from the touch area. I suspect the joystick is a "lesser of three evils" kinda thing. If I could say anything really negative about it, I'd level it at not having to press it down to operate, although it doesn't really require that much force to activate it anyway.
