I'm keen for the Harmony 880, I've got the current MCE space disco bumpy cucumer aka harmony 680, which will be relegated to bedroom duty because i'm up to 3 remotes in there at the moment, which is really, really, really stupid.

I need to verify the the learning capabilities, but it seems to be the same, and from memory it has the learning instructions on the back of the keyboard. Will verify...

Verified - instructions for reprogramming power and volume on the back of the keyboard.

Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

Correct me if I'm wrong:

1. This keyboard will only work if I own a Media Center Remote control from Microsoft.
2. This keyboard is using IR, thus it will require the keyboard to be in line of sight with the IR receiver from the Media Center Remote.

Thanks...

Hmm, would have been nice to have more buttons programable - so I can turn on/off both the projector and the receiver.

Hi W

1. You would only need the MS receiver (plus the sw update), not the MS remote, but considering you need to buy the MS remote in a kit with the receiver... anyway not sure how likely it is that third parties would release MCE compatible receivers, but there was a WinHEC session on it this year - http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...7_WinHEC05.ppt - so it's possible case manufacturers could build it in to cases or elease standalone when MCE hits critical mass.

2. It doesn't require absolute LoS, but my old IR keyboard had 3 IR ports to give fairly good coverage, the MS one only has one off center at the rear. My IR receiver isn't really in a visible location but it still picks up fine.

What about using the MCE remote power for one and MCE keyboard power for the other? Still a two device solution, but both remote devices are probably going to be available anyway.

The extra buttons on the MS keyboard spit out the same IR codes as the remote so MCE thinks its the same button and does not know which device sent it so no you can have them doing different things!

I think I'm missing something here - wouldn't the learned codes for power/vol+/vol- be stored on the remote, and be unique across the remote devices? I've never bothered using the feature because I rarely use the MCE remote, just the receiver.

Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

I want to get both the remote + keyboard. So far after browsing, the cheapest I can get is: remote ($69) and keyboard ($89) in http://www.mediacentre.net.au/. Anyone know whether there is any place cheaper? I live in Perth.

Re: New Media Center Keyboard From Microsoft

I want to hear what the range is like on these things guys, so dont hold back...

Also, try using the keyboard whilst not in line-of-site...say on different angles, or by bouncing the signal off a wall. These tests will help me choose whether to get one of these, or whether to go bluetooth.

Thanks
