Windows Home Server - Public Beta

Microsoft announced the release of the Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Windows Home Server which means WHS Beta 2 is now available to the public! You'll have to be an 'eligible tester' by providing some basic info, but if you've got a spare PC on your network and a broadband connection, you'll probably be in with a big chancel.

Remember, that WHS provides full auto backups for all PCs on your network, allows for remote file access and remote desktop control plus includes support for Windows Mobile and Zune devices.

For more WHS information go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver

or click here to apply for the beta.

Re: Windows Home Server - Public Beta

Is this a new build or has the same old beta gone public?

I would really like some of the crap fixed before I play with WHS again, my data is precious to me.

Re: Windows Home Server - Public Beta

This is a new build (compared to beta 2 - that was available a couple of months ago).

Just finalising the upgrade. Password stength has been increased for any accounts that use remote access over the net. Also the server password needs to meet a minimum level (7 characters + a couple of other requirements).

You can now turn off the server health alerts on each pc.

During installation, you can choose "upgrade" (I think it was reinstallation during setup) for those already running WHS.

The new version has a few cosmetic changes. Most of the improvements appear to be "under the bonnet".

Ice

All running smoothly now. Just setting up the last connected pc.

Re: Windows Home Server - Public Beta

I've got my copy downloading at home at the moment. Really don't like the download manager that I was forced to use by Microsoft to get the download. Maybe I missed an option to download it just standard through my browser? Oh well. Should be ready when I get home, for some reason it was only downloading at 50kB/sec where I'm used to 900+kB/sec! Ah well. Looking forward to trying this out. Was not a Beta 1 or 2 tester but applied for it a few days ago.

Re: Windows Home Server - Public Beta

I'm just curious why our existing WHS's are stuck at 6.0.1301 or something like that, with automatic updates turned on and the public beta release is 6.0.1372 or something close. Basically a later version. Shouldn't it be released at the same point we're running at. That's what we've tested.

Lester

EDIT: Just read ice's post, so I will try the upgrade path.

I think this is pretty normal for the first few days of any large MS release. In a few days time you would get the speeds you are after.
They have added some great new features from the last Beta but i have come across a couple of Minor Bugs so far.

Might be the difference between me upgrading, just yet.

Oh well that would make sense. I never participated in Beta1 or Beta2 trials. I simply put in my request yesterday and got an email last night accepting my request so I began downloading it this morning. Should hopefully be ready by the time I get home!

I had folder duplication fail on some shares more than once with it saying insufficient disk space when i have 500GB free. I have seen it twice now but just turning off duplication and switching it back on seems to have fixed the problem. This is minor really and its worth upgrading in my opinion because there are more options for the control of notifications and the added inbuilt redundancy.
