Black Xbox 360 to Spoil PS3 Launch

Recent rumors of a brand new black-colored Xbox 360 machine have set the gaming industry's rumors on fire. According to a post by Gamerreports, an inside source revealed to them that Myer, recently received phone calls from Microsoft informing them to prepare their stores for a shipment of new black 360s equipped with 120 GB hard drives and HDMI support.

The console is rumored to cost $749 AUD and will be due in Australia in the month of April, but the source claims that Microsoft is trying to push for an earlier launch to interfere with Australia's PS3 launch on March 23rd.

Although the post claims that this news is now "100% official", the author offers no actual official sources, nor has there been a confirmation from Microsoft Australia. The company dismisses anything not found in their press releases or on Xbox.com as nothing more than pure rumor and speculation at the moment. Look out for an update on this story soon.

If they (MS) really wanted to kill the PS3 they'd open the 360 to homebrew. If this ever happened the PS3 would virtually disapear.

Doubt it, people will by the PS3 because they want a kickarse game console. Homebrew means nothing to these people which would be the majority.

Re: Black Xbox 360 to Spoil PS3 Launch

Im not sure how well the PS3 will really do in Australia to be honest. I have not had one pre-order for the PS3 in my store, i am still getting quite alot of Xbox 360 & Nintendo Wii sales though (well pre-orders for the wii, as they have been basically out of stock since launch date). I really just think that MS has a great deal more to offer with their console at a much more reasonable price, fantastic online stuff, large selection of games already, Media Centre compatability, media in general.

The only real way it could spoil, or at least stain, the PS3 launch is if this 'black' unit contains a HD-DVD drive along with the claimed HDMI and 120GB HDD - and is released on March 31st.

Agreed.

Ive only used about 5gb atm however if the new xbox is quieter with a new revision or something, with a built in HD DVD drive and HDMI (Not as big a factor) it will pwn lol

What could the space be used for?

Also i second the fact that homebrew would be a big woop for noone, most consumers are attracted by large titles

MS wont do that as there big catch cry is that they give us a choice and dont force a new dvd format on us.

Re: Black Xbox 360 to Spoil PS3 Launch

No thats right , they dont have any intentions to make it a built in HD Drive, the games arent going to be made on HD discs (not for this gen console anyhow ). The space will be used for when we get a similar thing to what the US has on Xbox Live already, video rentals and TV show downloads and apprently when you have it in Extender Mode you can instead of recording to your PC you can save the content directly to the 360 HDD.

Also i dont think that this will come out in March either, I own/run a game shop and have not been notified of any plans like this, Why would Microsoft limit their sales to MYER only??? There are many more Harvey Normans around then MYER.

Re: Black Xbox 360 to Spoil PS3 Launch

and this news item has not turned up on xbox scene and they know about eveyrthing first .

Could be a dev box but a HDMI 120gb HDD xbox is hardly going to launch in australia before the US.

It does exist, pics on xbox scene of white with HDMI and 120gb.

I am prepared to eat my words in 20 odd days though

Re: Black Xbox 360 to Spoil PS3 Launch

I wish there was some easy way to up\grade existing xbox 360 with this hdmi and 120gig hdd, surely there will be a way to copy your existing data from the 20gig to the 120. I doubt there will be a converter for hdmi though . why must us early adopters be punished, well to be true we arent really early adopters the 360 has been out for amost 12 months in Australia and loinger in the USA, really they are going to punish millions of people. I had only ever owned a PSone when they came out, i had an xbox for a little while but never used it, I bought the 360 for impressive features and content.

Re: Black Xbox 360 to Spoil PS3 Launch

yeah it sucks in a way.

Just do what I plan to do. Wait until laser TV's are around and by then the HDMI xbox (even a core one, hdd isn't such a big deal cause we wont get the IPTV anytime in the next 3 years of this consoles lifecycle) will be cheap enough to use as a extender to main, the old xbox can go in games/kids room etc and Media server somewhere else

I think there will be an HDMI adapter for existing XBox owners (the backlash is bad now, but with the new rumours of a HDMI output XBox it will be deafening) - MS would have strategically planed for it and with the support of 1080p over VGA, albeit analogue, demonstrates that the XBox can be pushed for 1080p output (but I don't think this will be the case for games, the GPU just is not cut out for it). But I am worried that something has not been announced by now, but then again maybe it will be announced when the HDMI XBox is.

I also think that the 120GB HDD will be able to be purchased separately like the 20GB and will replace the 20GB option, but man I don't want to know what MS will slug us for it - I mean $169 for 20GB now is far from appealing.

EDIT: Spelling - Argh

Re: Black Xbox 360 to Spoil PS3 Launch

Seriously... How many people would be swayed by the fact the 360 is black...

"Oh.. I've been hanging out for a PS3 for months, never bought the 360 as I wasn't interested... But now it's black.. Well!! Cancel my PS3 order..."
