Vista ‘Family Pack’ Discount For Ultimate Users

Vista ‘Family Pack’ Discount For Ultimate Users

Even though the retail launch of Windows Vista just a couple of weeks away, Microsoft is still continuing to fine-tune its licensing and pricing details.

Sources are quoted as saying that Microsoft will announce over the next few days that the company will allow Vista Ultimate customers to purchase two additional copies of Vista Home Premium for somewhere between $50USD to $99USD each. ($63AUD & $126AUD)

In order to qualify for the so-called "Family Pack" promotion, customers will first need to purchase a retail copy of Vista Ultimate, which carries an estimated retail price of $399USD ($508AUD). The deal will not be offered to those who purchase Ultimate preloaded on a new PC, sources said, it will be for customers buying and/or upgrading via retail channels only.

Sources close to Microsoft were sketchy about some of the particulars. The exact price of the additional copies isn't clear: Some believe it will be $49.95USD per copy, others say $99.95USD. Vista Home Premium's current estimated retail price is $239USD ($304AUD) per copy.

Microsoft is making multiple versions of Vista available on a single DVD, as part of its Windows Anytime Upgrade marketing plan. As a result, users who want to take advantage of the new promotion will be able to "unlock" the additional licenses from their DVD using a software key after paying for the additional copies by credit card, sources said.

Ever since it announced its Vista pricing and licensing terms last year, Microsoft has been fine-tuning them, based on requests (and outcry) from its customer base.

In November 2006, Microsoft relaxed its policy regarding the number of devices upon which customers will be permitted to install legally a copy of Vista. Microsoft made the change due to complaints among its user — and especially, its power-user — base.

Some Microsoft developers and testers, most notably, Windows-Now.com founder Robert McLaws, have been advocating for Microsoft to consider some kind of family-licensing program. McLaws has been arguing since last summer that such a plan could benefit both Microsoft and its customers, if done right.

McLaws blogged in August 2006:

"If Microsoft were to make this (family discount program) happen, and every home that has more than one computer were to upgrade, Microsoft could realize at least $900 Million dollars in additional revenue. … I know not EVERY family will upgrade every computer, but of all the families I know, most have at least two computers in their house, and of those, most would rather upgrade them all at once.

"It’s a plan that has the potential to eliminate families unintentionally pirating software, AND it could get Vista onto millions of additional PCs. Will Microsoft actually do it? We’ll just have to wait and see."

Ultimately (no pun intended), the Family Pack discount is just one more way Microsoft is looking to continue to grow the Windows revenue stream, in a market where Windows already has more than 95 percent desktop operating-system market share.

That looks like a step in the right direction for those of us with multiple machines.

However, would a subscrption to TechNet Plus Direct @ $AUD512.00 inc GST, be a better and cheaper approach?

Re: Vista ‘Family Pack’ Discount For Ultimate Users

ok I've so far shown little to no interest in Vista. I am a games player (strategies and FPS) and have heard that Vista will not be 100% compatible with everything XP (games wise). I have also just read that Creative have dropped EAX and to get the full sound experience from Vista you will need to purchase an X-Fi sound card. There's talk of emulating EAX via software but we all know what software emulating hardware is like.

Now where do I find out what the current pricing is for Vista? Which version is everyone steering towards?

How so? Do you get a license of everything as part of TechNet Plus? Is that a yearly price?

Yes it is a yearly price. However, according to the TechNet website:

As a TechNet Plus Direct subscriber you can access all of your subscription benefits from the new TechNet Plus Benefits Portal, including:
- Servers, desktop apps, Windows Vista and more in the Subscriber-only Download Center
- Product Keys to use for “time-bomb free” evaluation
- Two Professional Support Incidents
- Managed Newsgroups
- Online Concierge Chat
- Microsoft E-learning Courses

With TechNet Direct you download the software, but there are other levels of membership where they send you the media.

TechNet Plus - Single User $740.00 inc GST
TechNet Plus - Multi User $1,480.00 inc GST
TechNet Plus - Single User Renewal $592.00 inc GST
TechNet Plus - Multi User Renewal $1,110.00 inc GST

Note the discounts for renewal.

That's about all I know about it. I posted a thread on this site the other day to try and find outs some more about it: M$ TechNet - is it worth subscribing?

Surely, the important word here is "evaluation"? Putting aside the (valid) question of is it ethically right to use evaluation software for purposes other than evaluation, there may be other technical issues such as no support through Windows Update. You may be limited to only installing system-critical updates, for example.

I'm only speculating, of course, but thought it might be worth considering.

Re: Vista ‘Family Pack’ Discount For Ultimate Users

Well I for one need some sort of family assistance before I even think of upgrading.

I have 1 MCE Machine in the lounge, I have my desktop in the study which is virtually the same as my MCE except for the TV Tuners and case, I have a 9 and a 7 year old who both have a computer in their bedroom and my wife has a duel boot MacBook that runs XP Pro and OSX.

Somebody please tell me how I could afford to upgrade more than two machines if there is no family licensing.

I work with Mac's all day and love the idea of of the Family pack Apples latest OSX Tiger is available for $299 and able to install on 5 computers located in the same household.

If Microsoft dont sort this out and Apple launch a Media Centre that does everything we have all come to expect,,,, Look Out!!!! I’ll be the first person to jump ship!

Re: Vista ‘Family Pack’ Discount For Ultimate Users

Of course for all the money you've paid for all those Mac PC's, no wonder Apple can afford to give a good deal on the O/S!!

Hehe, seriously though, 5 user licence for $299 is a good deal, MS probably aren't too worried about the Apple competition though, they likely see Vista as having it's own strong user base and not a huge percentage of cross-over loss to Apple.

I do hope Apple put up some Media Centre competition though, might spur MS to further improve the Vista version, which while nice, still needs a bit of improving to meet consumer expectations in the real world.

Cheers

The thing to consider in the MacOS vs Windows pricing debate is what you are paying for - Vista is a HUGE update compared to the moderate changes in Tiger. Windows has service packs, MacOS has new versions...

Who says that you need to upgrade them all? Especially at once. If only we could get special pricing on something just because we couldn't afford the full price....We'd all be in mansions.

I still can't see me making the Vista move soon. The DRM is enough to put me off for now.

Yep agree 100%. I remember the bad old days of going from '98 to XP the day XP came out. I think I'll leave it for quite a few months before I make the plunge.

The other thing to consider is that MaxOSX simply may never have needed HUGE updates to make it usable and therefore the users of it do not have to pay large sums.....

Yeah, right, and because it has such an advantage of Windows in every category it's the dominating system in the world

Re: Vista ‘Family Pack’ Discount For Ultimate Users

I wasn't talking about world domination.

I was talking about price comparison. The fact being that the users of MacOSX (forwhatever use they have for it), do not have to pay for a 5 year long catch up process where the users of Windows do.

Comparing the two is pointless. Comparing anything to Windows is pointless. It's a monopoly, we all know that and by the very definition nothing compares.

Cheers,

Arkay.
