Using your Pocket PC as a extra display for Windows

A new application called SideWindow has gone public beta.

Finally, the expensive desk ornament that used to be your cradled PDA can now serve a useful purpose. SideWindow transforms your PDA into a virtual desktop extension, allowing you to drag applications such as your favorite picture viewer, media player and instant messaging applications to your PDA while freeing your main display's real estate for something more useful.

SideWindow supports standard (240x320) and high (480x640) resolution devices such as the Dell x50v or the Toshiba e805, in either Landscape or Portrait mode. Intermediary resolutions are also supported, and can be configured easily . You can interact with the applications on the SideWindow using your mouse, fingers or stylus.

Just sync up, and your PDA is instantly transformed into a virtual screen extension. When your PDA is removed from the cradle, applications that were dragged onto the PDA automatically pop back onto your main display.

SideWindow is really the perfect companion for PDA and gadget nut. Go ahead, try it. And see just how cool your PDA can really be.

NOTE: Not yet tested on XP Media Center, although it might be very handy

Awesome! I've had an old iPAQ sitting idle in a cupboard for the past year or so. Now I finally have a use for it and don't need to buy a VFD.

I'm just going to have to track down the damn thing now.

Done and done! Spent an hour tracking down the Pocket PC, of course in the last box of 10 I looked through.

Very easy to setup. Connected the PPC installed Active Sync made sure I had the latest ROM etc. Installed SideWindow, it immediatelytook possession of the PPCs screen displaying the extended desktop. Dragged a small window over displayed perfectly, mouse movement was pretty jerky. Not sure if that's the fault of the USB 1.1 connection or the processing required, probably both.

SideWindows places the PPC screen to the right of the default monitor. I went into display prefs to move it above since my PPC is sitting above the TV. I noticed display prefs listed the resolution of the PPC as 1280x1024, so I tried dialing it down. The lowest it would go was in the 700 pixel range, as for the image displayed on screen it didn't make a bit of difference. After fiddling with display prefs the mouse would become trapped on the PPC screen. Haven't found a solution to that, but Ctrl-Shift-M sends the mouse back to the default monitor.

I didn't really know what to do with it so I installed Konfablator and dropped a weather widget and wireless signal strength widget on the PPC, looked good. Launched MCE, as soon as the MCE interface loaded up the widgets got thrown back to the main desktop. I assume this would happen with other windows too, will play around with it tonight. Locking the widgets in place prevented them jumping again.

The touchscreen didn't do anything but does seem to register taps. Touching the screen caused the MCE title bar and video controls to pop up on the main display.

Got that all finished around 2AM, three hours of sleep for me. Work is so much fun today.

Here's a picture of it in action. Any ideas what to use the new display for?
