Re: Windows Live OneCare Beta Begins Today!

It seems ok but I'm always cautious of interactions with online Microsoft. I have been stung many times before with "optimisation" and "automatic updates".

They don't seem to be offering anything new that we do not do already through 3rd party software or manual tuning through internet parenting software, virus checks, spyware, backups etc.

They only thing I can see to be "new' is the Live Mail.

It's good to see that Australia is included in the list this time! It's nice to feel included

I'll be staying clear of this at the moment.

Chrisco.

I think that is the point, Microsoft are trying to offer everything in one package, they dont want you going to 3rd parties. lol.

This is where they've already lost me; if checking back to Microsoft as a reliable guide to prevent phishing is anything other than internet tracking then I'm fooled. Given the interest in the internet 2 that Microsoft already have stated I'm not interested.

I had to uninstall it - my mouse pointer kept stalling so I messed around with all the Live background processes for an hour or so without even coming close to figuring out the problem.

Since I took it off and put Norton AV back - all's well again.

The phishing filter in IE7 only reports back what you tell it to report back - for example, when ANZ was updating their online banking site it gave me a warning and I clicker 'This site is not a dangerous site'. A few days later, no more warning.
I'd rather Microsoft keep a database of bad sites (that are sent to them) than for me and others to have to find out the hard way.

LOL! Norton is funny... I have found the beta a little crazy at times, but so far I haven't had any issues that'd make me even think about exiting the beta.

And that by itself is fair enough unless your still on dialup, in which case it'll make browsing slower. My problem is that Microsoft and google and a few other already wealthy enough to survive companies are trying to make the internet a place where you can only view sites approved by them but heaps faster ie. Internet 2. I'd rather not be used as a research victim by them.

Everything you buy is counted and watched - don't talk about evil corporations watching you, they have been doing it since technology first gave them access.

It's more a matter of how much effort they have to put in or if I'm going to hand it to them on a plate; make them sweat for it if you ask me.

The download isn't done via the MS website. Why is this?

Really? I didn't notice. It's probably one of their 'other' sites.. the secret ones used to distribute beta software and Microsoft love.

All a bit strange. The ms website has it for download but it is a 90 day trial. After that you can buy it.
