Hi all! I will start by saying what a wonderful place this forum is to be here. Together brain power will grow and problems will be left well wont be problems. Anyway my name is John and I am 23 years old. I am currently doing a degree in Software Engineering at Sheffield Hallam, Sheffield, UK so I am pretty good at this stuff.
So now I have introduced myself I am going to tell you my vision. My vision is to live in a house of the future right here, right now. There aint any point waiting for the market to bring it, together we tech people can create the things we want right now.
The current phase of my development is the media section. This is having the ability to watch, listen to anything stored on my Windows Home Server. I have managed to centrally locate my DVDs including the DVD Info Cache for holding data of the DVDs, Music, Videos and Photos. The Music, Videos and Photos on the Local PCs have now had their locations changed to now see the server as being the new location, this stops media center putting folders in the wrong places which I thought was quite messy (video folder showing in picture folder etc.). I have also relocated every folder in the user area to point to the user area of each family member on the server. This way the files are kept on the server so can be accessed from any computer in the house. For example my IE favourites are now visible in every room.
As you can see I have achieved quite a lot but there are still things to be done in this area. I have been reading up on recording tv files straight to the Windows Home Server. I had this working but like other people who have tried the same happened to me. It works and then it don't and it messed my computer up. So I installed and am now taking regular backup images of my hard drives so I don't have to do everything again. So my next idea is to use Recorded TV Manager that as I know just moves the TV recording after it has finished so can not be watched in another room until the show has finished. Well I will make a post after I have tried this today to tell you if it works but would still like suggestions on recording directly to the server. And if anyone has any questions I am happy to help.
