Introduction from a new member
Greetings to all the members of the community. I'm not Australian, but, my husband is, and we're planning to eventually move there. I hope everyone will be able to forgive my American spelling and idiom.
I've been given a setup by my cousin as a combination gaming and media center. Bach media center case with a remote control, Asus M2N32-SLI motherboard, XFS GeForce 7800 GS video card, 2 gigs ram, Windows XP Media Center, a basic Turtle Beach sound card, AMD 3800+ CPU, 500 watt power supply, etc. It also has two tv tuner cards, although I have to sort out what's what and which I'm going to use.
We're living with my cousin right now and she has a nice HDTV in her living room. The Media lab was borrowed by someone else and left in an undusted room for a year with the top cover removed and the innards completely exposed. The assorted fans are extremely dirty, but, the basic unit seems sound. I've been (carefully) cleaning it and determining what parts I can salvage and what's likely to be replaced (#1 on the list to replace, power supply, as the fan makes an odd grinding noise).
The goal is to replace what needs to be replaced, clean out what can be cleaned, get the system screwed back together and connected to her TV, and used as a combination media center/ personal DVR unit, and "gaming" system (playing games like the Sims 2 or Spore on the big family TV, since everyone in the house likes to watch them).
I'll be going into lurk mode for a bit to read more. I just wanted to introduce myself to the community and send my enthusiastic greetings out to everyone.
I've never put together my own PC. This is going to be a fun learning experience for me!
