Too many channels !! Which ones to choose?!

Hiya all,

I've just had to rebuild my MC, for one reason or another...

Now I've done a scan, and received 8 channels ( not bloody many !)

I've "setup guide listings", it scanned, and found 8 services.
Nowwhen I go to "Edit Channels" there's 500 od listings there.
For example, several 9 HD channels etc.
They all have different MHz values next to them, why are there so many?
When i select the channels I want, some of them don't display, so it's like I need to check through every single 9HD listing available, 'till there's one that gives me a signal?
So I select the ones that I want, then I go to add guide listings for channels, and most of them don't work or don't appear....

Is there an easier way to do this?

Or is the only way trial & error ?

( I hope I'm making sense!)

In the media center setup (not exactly sure where, maybe someone else can give better directions) there is an option to delete all existing channels. You should run this first and then do a rescan. It should then only pick up and list the channels you can acutally receive.

OK, will see what I can find.
I might have t go as far as a MCE reset...

On that note...which is the better channel to chose ?
As in 500MHz or 170MHz...I don't quite get which one would be better, if any.

The best frequency to choose is the one that you get the best signal strength from. If you're getting the same channel appearing separately on two different frequencies, then you are receiving broadcasts from two different transmitters. Which is best will be determined by type and orientation of your antenna.

You should pop over to the DTV forums and go to your local geographical reception forum and read the "Getting the best reception" sticky. You should find a list of all the different frequencies for each channel and where they are broadcast from. This will give you a good starting point.

You can also check out this website

Enter your postcode an a map will show with the signals that service your area and their frequencies. Choose the frequencies that are the strongest for your area.

Re: Too many channels !! Which ones to choose?!

Thanks for the links guys.

I ran the MCE reset tool.
Rescanned.
Picked up many many channels.
Then I did it the long hard way, not sure that there's an easier way!

I went through my default guide, all channels, no data.
Checked for the channels I wanted, tried each one 'till I found the ones with good reception.
Wrote down on paper which channels I wanted to keep.
Then went through and edited my guide listings/channels etc, to cut out the crap.

It took a while, but it's all setup now.
