Is there a way of making a backup of the data that the guide contains as to which programs are to be recorded. I am mainly interested in the series recordings data. Is it a case of moving a certain file to another location on my "D" Drive? Or do i need a batch file to run each week.
Cheers
Robert

The easiest way is to either use the MCE reset tool (carefully!) to back it up, or to copy the recordings.xml file from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\eHome\Recording

Accessing Vista's documents and settings folder is impossible unless you are logged on as an administrator or you can just try using the sledge hammer approach that i used.
I enabled the Administrator account, logged in as it and did a "take ownership" of my complete C drive. All protected files and folders are now accessible.
Right click "C:" - Properties - Security - Advanced - Owner - Edit
Select user that needs to be owner and tick on "Replace owner on sub-containers and object"
During this process Vista complaints about some objects and folders that are still inaccessible but they don't matter.
I was then able to access documents and settings and get to the recordings.XML file

Sorry Robert, I was thinking MCE2005 for some stupid reason. Never had to do it in Vista.
Justin
Not a problem Jason, thank you for the pointer. And they wonder why people dislike Vista so much. Nothing like a quick google for things vista these days. However I have been wondering how vulnerable it now leaves me?
I thought i should add the work around for future readers.
Cheers
Robert
