The Speakers, they tell me things.

G'day everyone, i've decided its time to stop listening to my music through a $30 pair of Logitech headphones and bite the bullet to get some speakers. I'm after something that wont distort when things get loud, i've eyed off these speakers which look pretty awesome:

Click me to see

$440 which is quite expensive, they have a total of 320W power which should be sufficient to blast my eardrums out of my head. I've read two reviews on them and they've brought back some positive reviews.

I don't really need a 5.1 setup, because i wouldn't be able to position them properly to get the full effect of them anyways but the Logitech Z5500D's caught my eye:

$340 which is $100 cheaper than the 2.1 set up with more power? Would it be worth going these instead over the Edifiers? I plan on getting an Xbox 360 later on this year when they bring in 1680x1050 support which should be great, that means i don't have to use the HTPC's screen which means moving everything around all the time.

Even these have caught my eye for a 2.1 setup:

These are a bit weaker than the others, but are cheaper even still.

At the moment i either listen to the music through the crappy headset or the crappy HTPC speakers, which are Creative InSpire 5200s, they distort and go all crappy when you bring it up to about 70% volume which doesn't even fill the room with sound, I'm in a lounge room so its quite a large space. Anything really would be better than them, what do you guys think?

I mainly listen to a wide range of music but i like my bass, mainly Hard Trance/Hardcore but i do listen to Classical also. So bass overpowering everything isn't so bad for the Hard Trance/Hardcore sides of music. Occasionally i like to blast out Patrick Hernandez's Born to be Alive hehe.

Thanks in advance, help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,
The first ones are the only wooden speakers from your choice. Wood will always give you better sound and if you don't want to go for a separate receiver and set of proper speakers then Edifier S730 would be my choice.
Other stuff is just a plain rubbish, sorry for being direct

Righto, no problem with being direct

Thanks very much Vlad, I'd still like to see other people share their opinions too if possible! I also just realised i put this in the wrong section, if a mod would be kind enough to move it into the "Home Theater" section i would be very grateful, thanks.

Re: The Speakers, they tell me things.

Please let me know if you do you go with the Edifier S730's. I'm thinking about getting a pair as well. Mainly to use with my shared PC/xbox360 LCD screen. Maybe in future I could use them as a pair of home theatre speakers in the lounge room (seeing as they are quite powerful [2 x 75W satellites] and have an LCD remote and wired remote).

I suppose you will be using a VGA cable for your LCD monitor? I'm currently using HDMI (I've got a 24 inch) but will consider 'hacking' a cheaper cable just for the optical out, and using the HDMI into the monitor still. In the mean time, I'm using the 3.5mm out from the LCD monitor that gets passed from the HDMI cable for sound into some altec lansing speakers.

Re: The Speakers, they tell me things.

Thanks for the replies guys, very much appreciated. I ended up picking up a PS3 bundled with MGS4 yesterday and i've just spoken to Dad and we're deciding to go with a good 2.1 set because we don't have the room to set up a 5.1 setup properly unfortunately, so the Edifiers will be the pick of the choise, now we will begin negotiations with the war and finance minister (Mum).

Thanks once again.

Please do tell how good/bad they are - I am considering getting them for my main rig.

Well, I've ordered the S730's and they'll be coming some time this week. I'll let you know how they go.

Re: The Speakers, they tell me things.

Just got them this afternoon. They're fantastic! The packaging is great, the included cables were fairly decent (although the included coax cable was too short for me).

Very clear, very loud, NO distortion and very good!
