I bought the 46" one on July 1 so as to get the Blu-ray player included, but it won't be delivered until next week, so I can't say too much about it yet.

Thumbs up Re: La46a650A1, La52a650a1 Samsung Series 6 LCD

Okay then,

So far I am really happy with the set. To our eyes the picture quality seems best on the movie setting and with the motion flow set to off. The set has all the inputs that you might want. I just received a package of five HDMI cables from Ezyhd.com, and have hooked up my TEVION PVR, but not yet the VISTA MCE machine as yet.

I am yet to fire up the computer. It is my assumption that I can just start it with the TV connected via HDMI and that this will be picked up at first go as the monitor.... but I am yet to try this as the family is getting used to the TV yet and I don't want to lower the WAF with anything else new.

By the by, went in to HN and the guy wanted to sell me some HDMI cables. Brought me the $359 ones with the old line of you have the best of TV's you therefore need to spend up ridiculously big on cabling. Anyhoo, I got 5 HDMI cables and some cable tags to go with them for $82.50 including delivery by courier. They seem to work really well.

Oh, and I don't have any problem with the finish of the set. It looks good and seems to be easy to watch. The free blu-ray player has been ordered. It will cost another $35 for delivery.

Cheers,

King Hilary.

Was there a specific reason you went for the 650 over the 550? I'm torn between the two for a 40" model...

100 Hz, whatever, that means.

The picture looked better, and HN was willing to price match the special on that TV offered by Digital Centre, which brought the price down below what they would have bargained the 550 down to.

Thanks.
We actually went out yesterday, had a good look at them and even my wife agrees the 650 is worth the extra! Not the expected outcome...

Now to sort out the cash and see what the best price is.

Re: La46a650A1, La52a650a1 Samsung Series 6 LCD

Has anyone used this as a HTPC display yet? Can it achieve 1:1 mapping at 1080p easily?

As I understand it the 100hz technology doesn't work with PC input so if you plan to use this as a HTPC display only it's probably not worth the extra money?

Re: La46a650A1, La52a650a1 Samsung Series 6 LCD

I was hoping to try it out this weekend, but SWMBO put the kaibosh on that planned event.

I am planning to run the output through HDMI and set the TV to just scan. Hoping this works because there won't be any other monitor for the HTPC (new MEDION box). I hope to make a stab at it this week, maybe Wednesday. I was stopped because I need to drill a couple of strategic holes in the back of the new under TV cabinet to let the HDMI and ariel cables flow freely.

Needless to say, this kind of activity gets very low WAF in our house.

Cheers,

King Hilary.

Re: La46a650A1, La52a650a1 Samsung Series 6 LCD

Okay, to continue the story.

Small window of opportunity. Drilled three holes in back of cabinet. One for ariel, one for HDMI cable and one for USB area, (the power cable hole already there).

I fired up the new Medion Vista box. The TV detected the HDMI input at 60 Hz without problem. First major road block -- Could not get the Medion keyboard to power up. I am completely stuck at the welcome, please add your pasword window. Even though the mouse works, you have to input at least one letter to give a name to the administrator.

Well eventually I had to go behind my study computer and unplug the keyboard that I am using to type this and bring it into the TV room. If anyone has a quick tip to get the wirless keyboard working I would appreciate it, but I am well aware that these are Medion (Aldi) quality level. Still I think it will get replaced if doesn't even work the once.

Next step was getting the sound to work. For now I have only connected the HDMI cable, so I had to make HDMI sound the default under VISTA. AFter that sound was present.

That was pretty well all I had time to test before putting away the drill, vacuuming and doing the dishes before SWMBO returned. Next panic was that I did not readily see how to turn the computer off under VISTA. After putting it to sleep and waking it up a few times, I finally found the off sequence. I couldn't leave it sleeping as the computer has a big flashing blue triangle to tell you it is still on, and I need the box to remain incognito for a little while longer.

But back to the intent of the thread. I am really happy with the picture on the LA46a650 and displaying the computer output via HDMI was absolutely no hassle.

Cheers,

King Hilary.

Re: La46a650A1, La52a650a1 Samsung Series 6 LCD

Hi KingHilary,

I've never seen nor heard of Medion, however if you can you might want to check the "BIOS" setting and check for a USB setting for wireless keyboard. Some BIOS's let you control the wireless usb devices from the hardware level not O/S. It may not even be enabled?

Just a suggestion.

Re: La46a650A1, La52a650a1 Samsung Series 6 LCD

thanks Innie,

Medion is an ALDI shopping mart brand of cheap computer. I have bought it as a second Media Centre specifically to go under this new TV. As this computer is pitched at the general non Media centre public as an entry level box, I would be surprised if I need to jig the BIOS settings. I am not game to do this just yet. I will see what Medion Help desk has to say about it when I get around to it. I suspect that it is the peripheral hardware that is the cheapest thing about this box.

So far I have crashed the system only once, and that was trying to play a disk before I had set the region setting on the player to 4. I have yet to play a blu-ray with it because I do not so far posess such a thing, but I plan to borrow one shortly and see how it goes.

Otherwise the box seems to record and play back without trouble. I have two days left to start the three month trial of BullGuard antivirus, but I will probably let that pass as well because I am not keen to attach to the internet just yet, although the computer does detect my wireless home network, so perhaps I will do this some day.

Again back to the TV. It picks up the HD 1080 output from Media Centre without problem and gives me a way to play these channels at the time of my choosing and skip the ads if I choose. I am very happy with the picture quality at present.

Cheers

K.H.

Re: La46a650A1, La52a650a1 Samsung Series 6 LCD

Hi mattylees,

What are you using for audio?

I am finding that the TV speakers lag ever so slightly behind the RCA audio outs at the back of the TV. The lag is much worse when the 100hrz motion flow is on, particularly when watching regular DVD's upscaled on the new blu-ray player.

I do not use the motion flow at all for any of the inputs now. PQ much better without it. I think that Samsung will lose some sales in those stores where they have motion flow on and the TV is compared with other brands.

For connecting to the HTPC I am using the resolutions recommended in the instructions, but I would have thought that you could set the input to "just scan" and that it would sort itself. Maybe I am wrong there.

The Blu ray discs are really good though.

King Hilary.
