Give me an audio setup (receiver, cables)

hi,

i'm hopeless with audio and cables, so I was hoping someone could recommend me a suitable audio/cabling config for my htpc setup.

I have:
- full HD 46inch Bravia X LCD tv
- htpc (with HD tuner card) and hdmi, dvi & spdif outs on the motherboard
- ps2
- 2 large floorstand speakers (2/2.1 channel then right?)
- universal remote

To be used for tv, surfing web, ps2, movies etc.

I need advice on a receiver/amp and which cables to hook it all up.

thanks in advance

Couple of questions,

1. Do you want to stick with just stereo?
2. What's your budget?

sticking with stereo for now....

is it ok to run stereo through, for example, a 7.1 receiver?

budget = the cheaper the better, to max of $1500

hdmi --- (hdmi cable) ----- amp ---- (hdmi cable) ----- tv

as for amplifier, anything pretty much these days even most low end amps
play 5.1 which exceeds your specs, however when you buy speakers in the future
will give you more thna you need.

it also depends on the specs of your existing speakers what type of power you
want in your amp.
