Angry Optical SPDIF connector troubles

I was connecting my HTPC to a new HT Amp and started by trying to connect my Gigabyte mobo Optical SPDIF to the amp only to discover the amp doesn't support 6 channel sound via optical only via coax (Thanks Kenwood!!!).

After a quick trip to "Hardly Normal"(Havey Norman I mean) I returned with the Digital Coax cable and tried to connect it.. Unforturnally the onboard sound card in the PC (a Realtek) still thinks the optical cable is connected and won't detect/enable the coax.

There is obviously a switch somewhere in the optical connector that is used to detect if a plug is inserted and its stuck..

Anybody got any ideas on if this is that case and what I can do about it? I have messed around in the plug as far as I am able but I suspect the switch is behind the "plastic flap" on the optical connector.
