With that kind of budget, your best bet is probably a 46" 1080p LCD. The Sony and Samsung models are generally well regarded. With you having mentioned Bluray and 1080i, my guess is that you will not settle for a 768p screen, so that will leave few plasma options in that price range.
There have been numerous claims of sub-$3k on dtvforum.info recently. Someone even claimed $2800. Not sure if you or they are including extended warranty. Also not sure if those claims include the $200 cashback that Sony are currently offering.
For what it's worth, I think sub-$3k after $200 cashback is a cinch in the current market. That's assuming no extended warranty, and I certainly wouldn't bother with one.
After my plasma went cactus on me, I do care about extended warranty
Fair enough. Once bitten, twice shy I suppose. But the rate at which these screens drop in price, it doesn't seem like great value to me. Paying $300 odd dollars to insure something that will cost probably $1500 18 months down the track. It's an actuary's wet dream.

I see your point, but if mine is broken in 18 month I will probably go for another latest and greatest That is why my WAF insisted on extended warranty.

A good place to look is over at www.dtvforum.info. They have a wiki running there with all the latest prices people have been able to get. At the moment there are a spate of new models hitting the market between now and September. In the plasma market Panasonic has its new 8 series hitting stores. I've seen the new 50" 800 model advertised on DickSmith for $3500 which tells me that in a few weeks it should be had for closer to $3000. You can get the Pana 50" 80 series (1366x768) for $1900 which is an awesome price.
I have been reading about the 6 series Samsung LCD TV's that are supposed to be coming out this month. I thought I would wait a few more weeks. I would be worried that the older models would drop in price. Perhaps not, but it is disappointing if it happens just after you buy.
