Question No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

I've got a Vista Media Center running on a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H mainboard connected to a Panasonic TH-42PZ700A plasma via HDMI.

This setup works fine, provided the PC is powered on AFTER the TV (i.e. full 1080p and digital audio - works a treat).

I have a problem when the TV is turned off (via the red standby button on the TV remote) and the PC is left running (to record shows etc):

When I turn the TV back on again, I get full picture but no sound!

There is nothing I can do at this point to get sound working again - try switching between analogue and digital sound on the TV, swapping the cable to a different HDMI port, changing AV inputs on the TV etc...

The only thing that works is to restart the PC (logging off and log back in also works - something to do with resetting the video driver?) which is a real pain because it breaks recordings and takes ages to restart!

Does anyone know how to fix this??

I really need to resolve this as it is driving my wife mad and she wants me to get rid of the media PC

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

On the PC, does the HDMI audio device disappear when there is no HDMI connection (you would need to check this with a VGA or DVI monitor)? That's what happens with Intel integrated HDMI boards & I think it might happen with new Nvidia boards (8200), so I wouldn't be surprised if it happens with the new AMD/ATI ones.

If that's the case, when the HDMI audio device re-appears, it should automatically come back as the default device, but the output formats selection may have been screwed.

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

Hmmm not sure. Thanks for the heads up - will have to check that tonight.

I just spoke to someone from Panasonic about this and he seemed to think it was probably the PC causing the problem, as it is unlikely (although not impossible) that both HDMI ports on the TV would be broken.

He said that noone else has ever complained of this problem and he has definitely seen audio working from standby with a panasonic blu-ray player with this model TV.

Bit more research - The third reply on this forum post is exhibiting exactly the same problem with the same chipset (although different brand) motherboard (AMD 780G):

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?p=2700087

This makes me think it probably is something to do with the PC. Does anyone know anything about EDID or how to force the ATI 3200 chipset to not detect when the TV is disconnected?

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

Monkey,
I have a very similar setup and similar issue, but only sometimes.

I have the same motherboard running HDMI to a Yamaha amp, which then runs HDMI to a Panasonic 42" Plasma. My amp does all audio and video switching for me.

I can be watching Austar (analog input) and switch to the MCE input and have sound. If I switch back to Austar for a bit and then switch back to MCE, I can either have sound, or not have sound. I used to not have sound like clockwork, until I updated video drivers to Catalyst 8.4 (I think) - now it's intermittent. I too, have found that switching users fixes the issue as well.

logifuse, from what I can see on my setup, Vista thinks all devices are present and accounted for. If I bring up the volume slider and click on the slider, the green "level meter" appears to indicate Vista thinks it is playing a sound, but nothing is heard.

As a test, I've had an optical cable plugged in at the same time, and I'm pretty sure that switching the playback device to it works. Switching back to the HDMI device still doesn't work until log off and on. I'm blaming drivers, but I don't know which ones at this stage. I see new Catalyst (8.5) and I think new Realtek drivers are out as of this week, so I might try those and see if there's any difference.

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

I think I read in another post that CCC 8.5 is out & it fixes the sound issue!

Just upgraded to CCC 8.5 and can confirm that it definitely fixes the issue - sound definitely works when the TV is turned off and on again... Ace!

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

Edit: If I install the 8.5 drivers, it makes my picture have a black band all around it so I don't get the full size of the TV, I've tried changing my resolution but even at 1080p I still get a big black band around the picture. I can't get rid of it - do you have any suggestions for this? It seems whenever I fix one problem it just creates another!!!

Hi there, I have exactly the same setup as you including mobo and TV, I have exactly the same problem too!

Only thing is, if I update to the new Catalyst drivers the VFD on my Antec Fusion case stops working and the audio devices no longer come up in the VFD software so I can select one for the VFD to use. Pain in the butt, so it's either VFD and audio problem or VFD problem and audio!

Any ideas? I'm using the software from the disc that came with the Antec case, I have heard of people using the full iMON software with the VFD, not sure if this would solve the problem, think I might give it a go.

Here is my gear at any rate, cheers:

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

Not sure how to fix your VFD problem, although I'm using the iMON version 6 software (havn't tried 7 yet) on my case (Silverstone LC11) with this motherboard with no probs.

I encountered a similar problem with a black border on my plasma. The fix turned out to be adjusting the scaling in the catalyst control center, see:

Hope that helps!

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

Edit: just read that thread - I'll give it a go, thanks a lot!

Thanks heaps for that, I'll try it. I did see that setting when I was trying to fix the problem but I thought there was something else that was wrong. 1080p is a native resolution of the TV so if I set the computer to that it shouldn't need scaling - I'm not 100% on that though, can anyone confirm that as corrent or am I way off?

Thanks.

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

I think by default the HDMI scaling is set to less than 100% by default for some reason - IIRC I had to set it to 0% scaling and then it fit my plasma perfectly (and you can see the pixels perfectly on the screen).
Good luck with it!

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

This is a nightmare, it seems every time I resolve one problem another pops up!

So I installed Catalyst 8.6, sound issue so far hasn't reared it's ugly head but now I'm getting these ATI graphics driver errors: "atikmdag stopped responding and was recovered error"

I'm getting these when I try to watch TV through VMC. It seems it's a very common error and ATI is blaming everything else but their drivers. Bit silly seeing as before I installed 8.6 I didn't have this problem, only the sound issue.

This is seriously driving me insane, all I want is a working HTPC that won't crash or come up with errors when you reboot or resume from standby!

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

Is this still an issue for anyone else?

I tried installing Cataylst 8.5 (I have also tried 8.8 & 8.9) and when I suspended my Panasonic Plasma and turn it back on I loose audio via HDMI. I'm using a HD3450 video card (which has on board HDMI and audio).

So far I have tried:
- On the plasma forcing it to use digital audio over HDMI (opposed to using analogue or the tv automatically detecting)
- I've tried using both Vistas default and the ATI HDMI Audio driver (2.03).
- When I use the ATI audio driver vista tells me the audio device is unplugged when I turn the tv back on; when I use the vista driver it says it is plugged in and working (I just can't hear any sound).
- Restarting or login on/off fixes the problem.
- Unplugging the HDMI cable from the TV and replugging it in also fixes it.

If I can't fix this I might have to use analogue audio (but that defeats the aim of having a single cable connection!).

Thanks in advance,
Gareth.

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

Not sure if this is still a problem for people, but I noticed a similar issue with my setup and as long as I turn the Plasma (Panasonic Viera) on first and the input is displayed and then turn on the HTPC it never fails, sound always works. I have the latest version of Catalys drivers and my setup is;

MB - Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H
Case - Thermaltake DH101
PSU - Corsair HX520
CPU - 4850e
RAM - 2GB Corsair DDR2 6400
DVD - Pioneer DVR-115DBK
WiFi - Linksys WRT610N Dual N Band Wireless Router
TV - Hauppauge HVR-2200
Controls - Harmony One
HDD - Samsung 1TB
OS - MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32 with Media Centre

Cheers

Matt

Re: No sound with HDMI when TV wakes from standby?

I too have the Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H with a 4850e and HDMI to a Sony Bravia KDL-40V4000.

By turning on the TV, waiting a few seconds then waking the PC I seem to get a pretty good hit rate of having sound each time. On the occasions I have no sound I just pull the HDMI lead from the TV and replug, solves it every time. (fortunately I can reach this easily)

I do sometimes have the issue of having no video though, this does not resolve with an unplug / plug. Using CCC 8.10 and latest audio drivers.
