A hand Choosing speakers and Amp

Haha that stuff about the femailes is amusing - alas mine is also of the "why do we need a new one?" mold.....if she had her way we'd have a 34cm rank arena and a betmax with wired remote!
Quickly on speakers....
* 2nd hand is fine - they're not things that wear out if not thrashed.
* Aim for Aussie speakers...due to the weight factor they can compete very well with OS ones. eg Whatmough, Richter.
* If you have to buy in PARTS due to $$$ get your fronts first.....then a centre (don't skimp on this as it will carry all the voices when watching video....then the sub...then the rears.
Bear in mind you'll want them to tonally match.....so not all speakers work with others perfectly.
* For AVR's...Yamaha are hard to beat value wise. I have one but personally like what I read about NAD AVR's but they're pricey and harder to find....ebay material.
* Don't rule out using a soundcard and a power amp - some experts tip this.I'm still unsure about onboard sound solutions.
* Make sure your AVR/AMP can drive your speakers.....so match the ohm level of the speakers to what the AVR can do.
* Good speakers last forever so don't be afraid to spend a lil more......
* Don't get tricked into getting expensive cable but use something reasonable - Jaycar's of the roll stuff is fine - no need for banana pins etc!

So who paid for the old TV? If it was you throw it out yourself or put it in your computer room/office and have nothing in the lounge or detune the TV when your not watching it yourself.

SIMBOT is lucky to be allowed speakers. But one day, when the planets align, it may help to trick her into coming into the shop with you. That was how I eventually got ceiling speakers installed. Also, ... Never reveal the full price.

it just depends on how much you want to spend, and how much good crisp sound you expect.
you can spend 300 on a surround sound setup, or you can easily spend 10k.
I have always used yamaha as more core equipment, and JBL as my speakers. I am not a fan of satellite / wireless speakers they sound like utter crap.
My friend was going to buy a boss setup for 3.5k, which he thought was good listenign to blade, then i took him to a real shop, played the same movie and handed over his cash in 3 mintues for 1k more.
Also peoples ears are different, what sounds good to you , will sound differently to other people. Best bet is you take the same movie with you or a selection , so you can hear the difference.

For an Amp my rec. is the Onkyo TS-XR605 or if you can stretch a little more the Onkyo TS-XR705. both amps are some of the most fully featured Amps available today (yes more bang for buck than the Yammy's). both have upscaling from every connector type including composite to HDMI, HDMI passthrough. it will decode all the current audio formats including the new HD audio streams from BD discs.

i got the yamaha 3800 pretty sure it does all of the above too
Yep it sure does, but to compare
Yamaha RXV-3800 @ $2,499 RRP and aprox. $1,900 - $2,100 street price.
vs. an almost identically spec'd
Onkyo TX-SR605 @ $1,299 RRP and aprox. $900 - $1050 street price.
I know which I'd pick.
Ps. To be fair though the RXV-3800 and the Onkyo TX-SR705 are the comparable products, the Onkyo blows the Yammy out of the water at the same price bracket.
