DVI to HDMI video ok... but what about audio?

I've setup a PC to act as a media centre in my study. Very happy with it. Dual HD tuners, recording and watching everything fine, using my PC monitor and speakers.

I decided to replicate this by setting up a dedicated HTPC in the living room. Before purchasing the components, I just wanted to test everything worked fine on the brand new LG 50" plasma.

I connected the PC (with a GeForce 8800GT, dual DVI output) to the plasma TV with a DVI-HDMI adaptor and a regular HDMI cable. Everything looks great, but of course I've got no sound.

Any suggestions? I kinda suspected the video card would not output sound, but I'm not really sure how to proceed. The motherboard has a SPDIF output (both co-ax and optical), but the only optical port on the TV says "Output".

How do I get my PC to output audio to the plasma TV? Do I simply use a pair of those red & white audio cables? If so, how do I "link" that audio stream to the HDMI signal? I'm worried I'll have to use plain old S-video or composite, as these are the only ports grouped together (AV1 and AV2) with the red/white audio input plugs.

There is one "RGB IN" group that has RGP PC port (15pin D-sub) and a single "Audio (RGB/DVI)". Not even sure what cable to use with this, and what output port on the PC I should use!

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: DVI to HDMI video ok... but what about audio?

Best think to do would be get a receiver and send the signal there before sending it to your TV and getting the sound though your speakers.
For example integra receiver you would send the HDMI signal from your PC and the Sdif to the receiver and then plug in via HDMI to the TV.
Receiver Example

Failing that try plugging in the composite input (red and white) for say input one and see it it will out put that on the HDMI input

Does your 8800 have a connector on it for SPDIF passthrough? If so, you'll need to connect the SPDIF header pins from the motherboard to it to get sound through the HDMI port. You will also need to set the onboard digital sound to the default audio device & disbale all formats except stereo (probably at 48kHz).

If not, your LG should have an option in it's menus to map a stereo (red & white RCA) connection to your HDMI input. CHeck the manual.

Re: DVI to HDMI video ok... but what about audio?

Thanks for both suggestions guys.

When I bought the LG plasma, they had a deal going where you got a free AV receiver 6.1 Home Theatre system (http://au.lge.com/products/model/det..._ar702br.jhtml) worth about $900. This will be perfect.

Unfortunately, I don't think the 8800GT I have has a SPDIF pass-through.

Having said all that, this was just a test, and I will now start building my dedicated HTPC.

Do you have any recommendations for a silent video adaptor that has SPDIF pass-through?

Re: DVI to HDMI video ok... but what about audio?

On my Sharp LCD TV there are two RCA sockets (red & white) next to the HDMI input. The setup menu on the TV allows me to select which input to take the audio from - HDMI or the RCAs. So maybe investigate your TV menus to see if you have something similar.

Re: DVI to HDMI video ok... but what about audio?

My father's HTPC has an ATI card with DVI that comes with a DVI-HDMI adaptor that allows sound to go through the DVI port and then into the HDMI cable to the TV. I think the card has an audio chip built in.
If your new media centre doesn't have to be exactly the same as your existing one this could be an option.

MSI NX8500GT-MTD256EH/D2 has a 2 slot heatsink (no fan), HDMI connector (no DVI adapter needed) & SPDIF passthrough. Great for an HTPC, not so good for gaming.

The ATIs have an onboard sound chip, so they don't need to pass through the motherboard's sound.

Re: DVI to HDMI video ok... but what about audio?

Even if you do get a card with SPDIF pass through, you still might struggle to get sound to your amp via HDMI. My PC outputs sound through the HDMI cable (I know because sound comes out of the TV when it is connected), however the amp won't play audio via HDMI. I have had to connect a coax cable to the amp as well as the HDMI. It might work different with your setup (whatever it will be), but I know a lot of other people have had a similar problem.
