Vista machine accessing an XP's files

Hi guys,

Having one of those days where my networking skills aren't quite up to scratch.

In my office I have a Vista home premium machine. In the lounge, we have an XP MCE machine. Both can see each other, and the shared folders and files. I can copy off one to another, I just can't change the files of the other computer.

For example, I would really like to use the office pc to copy all of my media to the XPMCE machine. I can see the folders on the XP box, but I can't put files onto the drives as I get the "You need permission to perform this action" message.

I can't for the life of me work out where I give the vista machine access to change the folders of the other machine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Luke

PS. They're both in the same workgroup etc as they can see the files/folders without a problem. Its more of a permissions kind of thing I think.

On the Xp machine, right click the folder you are trying to share and open properties. Under the sharing tab open permissions and make sure that full control is checked for everyone.

Re: Vista machine accessing an XP's files

Thanks Krypto, but I don't see a permissions tab on XP. Sorry to be a dumb@ss, but networking is really not my strong point.

I don't know whats happened, cos this was working a little while ago and I don't remember changing anything.

I've got the same user setup on both machine (username and password are identical) and it has administrator access.

Any tips appreciated.

Cheers,
Birdie

In XP, right-click on the folder you are sharing and select "Sharing and Security..."

In the dialog box that opens, make sure the two check boxes indicated are selected.

Re: Vista machine accessing an XP's files

I'd love to claim this bit of advice as my own knowledge but sadly i cannot....

Try Network Magic. Install this little util on all machines and they can talk, sing and even hold hands with each other!! You can specify who can see and share what, and its all done in a windows icon based environment, that even I can see and understand...

Click here to end your networking woes!

It also works across Vista to XP machines etc...

Re: Vista machine accessing an XP's files

Sorry for taking a while to get back here, but I haven't been home much this week.

I've worked out how to get access to the permissions tab in XP - I hadn't unticked the simple file sharing tick box in the folder options.

I am now able to put my files onto the XP machine remotely from the office's Vista machine. I'll tinker some more to see if I really need the same users on both machines, but at least I know how to get it going again.

Thanks for your tips guys.

Luke

PS Andczo, if I bugger things up again I will definately try Network Magic, thanks for the heads up.
