star serve network with hmc

Just about to move into my new house this week and have installed a star serve system. Have been told can netwok through the house to both hmc and pc. Has anybody done this, and how easy is it to network these 2? One has Vista and the other has XP. Can this be a problem at all? need some help. Also might hook up external HDD through star serve also. Any knowledge would be helpfull in to how i would do this.

Re: star serve network with hmc

ok the star serve you installed does have a router in no? if so then its just a matter of going through and pluging it all in and setting up a home network. In both machines. Most star serve's I have seen do not normally come with a router/adsl modem is all.

Re: star serve network with hmc

I have StarServe (for video + IR distribution) in my house as well as a network (not StarServe).

If I understand correctly, you'll be using the networking capabilities of StarServe to use your XPMC (hooked to your TV?) with file access to your PC. IMHO, there are two hard things; ensuring that your router does DHCP (usually do by default), and setting up file shares so that your XPMC can 'see' the videos/photos/MP3s/etc on your PC.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask ...

Re: star serve network with hmc

Thanks mate. Move into the house this weekend, so when i get it all hooked up will most likely have some questions for you. But yes will have the media centre connected to the tv and networked to the office and laptop. Will keep you posted. ( hopefully it wont take telstra too long to connect broadband)
