I have a Vista laptop connecting via a switch to an XP Home workstation. They want to share file between them, but Vista doesn't want to play nice.
On the Vista laptop you can see and access the shares set up on the XP box no problem, but from the XP box you can see the shares on the Vista laptop but you get an access denied message. The Vista shares are all set to no password and everyone has full rights to the share.
I have put both PCs are inthe same workgroup and double-checked the share settings.
On Vista you need to give access to the share and the files. You can do this with a big hammer by placing "Everyone" in the "Security" tab "goups or user names" and again on the "Sharing" tab, Advanced Sharing, Permissions area. Clearly you can be more precise by adding only the actual account needed.
In theory the same is required for XP, however its just less fussy. Had the same thing while I still had XP on the MCEs a while back and a new Vista laptop.
Should fix it.

What are the easy steps to put both computers in the same workgroup?
In my set-up, probably due to bad management on my part, most of the family laptops, and one desktop all have the same workgroup, but the media centre has a work group of a different name. None of the computers are running VISTA and shared files are able to be viewed. It is not a big problem because I can always find an individual computer by looking for its name.
However, If I look at network neighborhood and click on the media centre's workgroup from a different computer, I get an access denied message, even though I can go to the mediacentre computer directly by searching.
Certainly not a big problem, and I wouldn't want to do anything that stopped the computers from talking, but your question made me wonder if.....
They are all should be in the same workgroup. Easy to change - just click right mouse button on "My Computer" and select Properties. go second Tab and change workgroup name.
Set up share permissions to allow access to all.
