Multiroom a/v cabling

Hi, I would like your advice on the best cable type to install to enable multiroom a/v from my media centre to other rooms. I am happy that it is the same channel on all tv's and I have previously used a wireless tv a/v transmitter but not happy as a permanent solution due to lack of quality, interference problems and 1-3s delay between rooms.

What I want to achieve is a budget solution (without using extenders) to watch digital tv on our bedroom tv and stream music (same song) throughout the house.

The options I can think of as follows between the media centre in the lounge, tv in the bedroom and speakers in the two guest bedrooms:
1) Use current wireless tv a/v transmitter
2) Cable using svideo and splitter to tv and amplified speakers
3) Cable using rca a/v and splitter to tv and amplified speakers
4) Get a multizone amplifier and run to nonamplifier speakers and run svideo to tv

I've done a search but not been able to find the answer on this site, apologies if it is somewhere.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Jansen

Re: Multiroom a/v cabling

Jansen,

I used to use AV transmitters but got sick of interference and intermittent IR performance (I have a double brick and steel house). I have gone with some quality 3 way single core shielded cable for straight AV with RCA, ie composite + LR audio, this is used for Foxtel not running through my MCE. I am quite happy with the result.

The cable is a bit like this http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.st...uct/View/W2007 (I can't find the actual one on-line). It is blue, has a slightly larger diameter strand for the video. It is designed to carry LR + Video.

I have two runs of this, a short one (15m) to the lounge room 37" LCD and a longer one (25m) to my downstairs games room to an older 34cm CRT. The rugby and music channels look fine on both.

SVideo is definitely a better quality (ie I use it for Foxtel to the local MCE), but personally I have never tried to run it over any distance.

I use no amplification, but I do have multiple outputs on the Foxtel box. For one run I do just use a "Y" splitter, not problems there. If a "Y" split fails you amplification can always be added later.

Re: Multiroom a/v cabling

Thanks DDH.

An after thought would be to add IR remote control capability from the bedroom to the VMC in the lounge replacing the current wireless IR transmitter functionaility.

I am considering adding USB cabling to enable another micorosoft IR receiver to be connected to the VMC from the bedroom. Do you know if the VMC can handle 2 IR receivers plugged in or is there a simpler way to achieve the same result?

To answer the second bit first .... yes you can hang more than one MS IR receiver off a MCE box (not standard). I have read about it but never tried, I don't think too many have.

IMHO the best solution is to run another couple of wires with the AV run and have a wired IR repeater. This is what I do, no interference, no dodgy registry hacks - just works.

Re: Multiroom a/v cabling

Nice to know there is an expert with a similar set-up.

I have been experimenting over the weekend with different cables, resolutions etc to ensure I can get the right aspect ratio, over/underscan on my Panasonic 42" plansma and Sony 26" LCD (non HDMI/DVI). If having a clone view rather than desktop extension VMC seems to limit the video output to one configuration for both (!) and hence only the PC VGA output worked on both TVs so I am looking into a VGA splitter to connect to the PC input in both TVs.

Do you have any recommendations on wired repeaters? All I can find are wireless IR repeaters.

Apologies again for the questions and thanks in advance,

Jansen

Re: Multiroom a/v cabling

The wired repeater you refer to is the IR extender?

I've had a bit of a look around and can't see any - wow I've had mine for ages, perhaps they think everyone wants wireless! I got mine from a local Hi-Fi shop about 6-7 years ago. If I find anything I'll post it back here.

There is the DIY option http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView...Max=&SUBCATID=
