So tell me, 802.11n is only as good as your G Devices?
Ok, Maybe someone can clear this up for me.
802.11n is the choice for the new Extender Devices. How does an 802.11n Router handle slower devices, namely 802.11a/b/g.
My guess is we will all be forking out big $$ for 802.11n routers, followed by replacing all those 802.11g cards (Well, can't do that with the inbuilt chips on notebooks and motherboards!) with "N" devices.
To me, if an 802.11n router drops it's speed back to 54mbs, then what's the point? If i'm streaming to my extender, and the WAF turns on the Laptop and bottlenecks my wireless network, who do I curse? WAF or the oversight of the 802.11n design?
Next question, how would you overcome running 802.11n in conjunction with all those 802.11g devices without performance hits? Two seperate routers maybe?
I know, I should do more research, but It's too easy getting answers on these forums.

It's quite simple really......

Re: So tell me, 802.11n is only as good as your G Devices?
A wireless access point "drops back" to the slowest device that connects to it when in auto mode. In fact it doesn't even have to be our device! If your neighbour has an older HP Ipaq for example, your will be back to 802.11b not even 802.11g, despite that fact that MAC rejection via ACL or a WEP / WPA key keeps them out.
The only solution that I am aware of is two separate wireless base stations, one locked to g and the other to n. Of course if you do this, watch out for the channel you select too. Channel 2 overlaps 1 and 3 overlaps 2, etc. The whole thing then wraps around at about channel 4. From memory (and given my memory I'd look this up!), if you have two devices use something like channel 1 and 4, or 5 and 9 - the idea is to avoid overlap for best results and least interference between locked devices.

Yes I have to admit that I have found wifi to be a bit of a dog really and there's no way on god's earth it's getting near my MCE or my Media Server. I have it purely and solely for my Kids' upstairs PC so they can access the internet for MSN. There is no substitute for hard wiring IMO.
Re: So tell me, 802.11n is only as good as your G Devices?
Sorry for the "bash wifi" hijack Innie, but I do think the spending on newer, greater, more powerful wifi equipment needs to be questioned. The simple fact is that it's a shared medium - you have no control how anyone outside of your house uses it & you can't stop their use from impacting on your use (wrapping the house in alfoil might help). You can't protect your investment.

Re: So tell me, 802.11n is only as good as your G Devices?
Hi Guys,
I absolutely agree that the wifi standards are very limited. I cannot believe the the 802.11n was ratified as backwards compatible with A/B/G. Surely there should be 2 versions, a straight vanilla 802.11n which only talks to other 802.11n devices at full speed.
Of course, I won't be touching wifi for media, stick with the old RJ45 and some cat 5e or 6. Cat 5e is more than acceptable for my needs.
I guess the option is there with the extenders should I ever end up in a high density living arrangement and can't run wires through the place.
I really do hope they release Hardwired Ethernet extenders only, as the look of those DLINKS are horrible with those damn antennas! AT least NETGEAR learnt to build their antennas internally on their routers.

Re: So tell me, 802.11n is only as good as your G Devices?
Personally I have no problems with 802.11n.
In fact, I'm going to be moving my HTPC and Xbox 360 (which connect to my network using a 100mb switch and ethernet) over to a 802.11n access point and a wireless bridge very shortly.
By doing this I can get rid of an ethernet cable running around the walls looking ugly and I don't have to get the house cabled up.
Considering I'm upgrading my 802.11n access point because the 100mbit ethernet port is too slow, I think its easily capable of handling media needs.
Re: So tell me, 802.11n is only as good as your G Devices?
lol... Given the likelihood for fall-back and my experience with signal drop-out and interference I can only say good luck. If it works for you then well and good but be aware that you won't necessarily be in a majority.
