Primary DNS Issue

Hi,

My HTPC is connected to my D-Link DSL-504G boradband modem/router and has suddenly been unable to connect to the internet.

My laptop has no trouble with the internet, accessing the same modem via a separate Belkin wireless router. Both PC's are running Vista.

The PC says something about not connecting to the Primary DNS server. I've tried changing the Primary DNS settings to the net providers recommended settings, and even other settings recommended on other sites, all to no avail.

Any suggestions? I'm wondering whether there is an issue with the onboard network adapter and perhaps an stand alone card would be a simple fix?

Thanks
Brett

Re: Primary DNS Issue

Brett,

The onboard vs stand alone network adapter will make no difference (unless the on board is faulty - test if you can "PING" your laptop).

You should be fine with your ISPs supplied DNS address(s) and other settings. Can you reach the outside world from your MCE box at all? ie on your laptop do an "NSLOOKUP www.microsoft.com.au" (or other web site) and get the IP address, then try to ping that address from you MCE machine. If you can't get a response then you probably have no connectivity, if you can then it may only be DNS.

Is the Belkin a wireless router, or just an access point? From what you've described here, the laptop & HTPC are on different networks - as far as your laptop is concerned, the HTPC is in the WAN not the LAN. But that's by the by as it's the HTPC having the connection problems.....

The only DNS for the HTPC should be the DSL-504G's LAN address (something like 192.168.0.1). Is the DSL-504G set up as a DHCP server? If so, your HTPC should get it's address & details from the DHCP.

Justin

Re: Primary DNS Issue

Thanks for the replies.

The laptop suddenly developed the same problem today and I was forced to call my internet provider. After working through the problem patiently with me for over an hour, the support guy finally gave me the bad news it looked like the modem had developed a fault.

Quick trip to the store and a new modem/router has things back working perfectly.

Thanks again for the replies, and big thanks to iinet who's customer support was brilliant as always.
