Ok, huge problem, been troubleshooting for over 24hours straight trying to figure out this networking problem. I guess it's kinda good in a way because I just got vista & have been digging around this system for what seems like days & I know where everything is etc.
Ok, I'm trying to get vista to browse online via my netgear adsl modem which is running through a switch which is communicating to two computers. One is an XP Pro (which has no problems browsing the net) & the other is a Vista Ultimate (which can't browse). I've tried everything to get these two computers to talk to each other from swapping & changing ip's to cables to cmd ipconfig's & pings left right & center, I swear it's a good thing this ain't inner city traffic because people would'nt know their left from there right, I mean traffic is every where here.
I've looked everywhere online via google looking up troubleshooting guides & still found nothing that could get my damn Vista to surf the net, even if the modem was plugged right into the sucker.
Through all the drama & 500 coffee's I managed to get the Vista to be able to network xp's share folders & ping the modem from both computers & ping both computers from both computers (slurring here, Kinda wired & stuff) yet somehow & someway & form I still can't manage (no matter the progress) to be able to surf the net with the damn Vista....
Now I dunno what the deal is but I thought it'd be a little easier than this, I mean the Vista can configure modem from explorer & read an internet connection but it can't bloody surf.
Anyone got any ideas as to what I need to do?
*Sigh* I ain't spent so much time troubleshooting since I had a computer which I had to format every week or few days because mice were ****ing, sleeping & ****ting in the case & the damn network card would'nt receive a frigging ping....
I had the same problem, after hours of mucking around i finally gave in and gave my router and modem to a friend to setup for me
I now have my XP Pro Desktop, XP Pro Laptop and Vista Home Premium all talking to each other and all on the internet. The 2 laptops are wireless and the desktop connected to the router.
No help to you i know, just thought i would share
Sorry to hear about the grief - basic questions here to start with . . .
- 1st dumb question: do your pc's get their IP address from the router in questions via DHCP? Are they set up with statis IPs?? Is their gateway IP address that of the router?
- you can log into the router's homepage / configuration page from either / both / none of the computers connected to the switch?
- assuming the above is a YES, on the Vista machine does your network control centre look anything like "network1.jpg"? If it does, then have you tried internet access with the Windows Firewall completely turned off?
To anwer your 1st question bolta yes & no, you see the strange thing is that while the switch hosts a DHCP server default of 192.168.0.1 the only way the XP hits home is when I obtain automatically, whereas if I do the same thing with the Vista, it reads that it is connected to the internet as u say on the switches host page but will not in no form whatsoever connect?
Yeah, has me baffled, they (Vista & XP) both read the internet connection but could'nt see eachother till I manually configured ip at which point they lost internet, *yah, I know*, so I managed to find a way around that (hoping each step I'd get closer to synching both com's was going to bring me closer to cracking the network), I ipconfig'd the XP (Auto detect) & used it's ip as the default gateway & manually config'd the vistas ip to that corresponding next to the switches 192.168.0.2 ... By doing this I got all computers talking to eachother like a normal network but still no internet on the vista????
If your wondering I tried all the formal routes to troubleshooting this but absolutely non of em' worked, the bastard wont budge...
I was reading on the net that networking problems between xp & vista occur all the time where they just wanted the computers to see eachother but I hav'nt found anything yet on the problem of no internet...
It's kinda funny but the only thing I can do right now is crack it somehow, formattings out of the question because it's a laptop with no floppy & I have no external flop to boot up & detect the friggin hard drive to format it, so I already tried that.
& ya know what else, the only reason I'm so adamant in cracking this Damn internet is because I just got this laptop & I wanna see how 1.5 ram & 650g-card flies with CS:S Cranked all the way up!!!!!
BTW, the firewall is off, hang-on maybe there's another program on here that has a firewall, PS: I'll go check.....
Thanks for the help.

Reason: Had to say Damn!
Try this: (assuming the routers IP is 192.168.0.1)
XP's
IP: 192.168.0.3
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Vista's
IP: 192.168.0.4
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Strictly speaking when you set both Xp & Vista to automatic, it should have done the above.
Now, if the 2 PC's are in the same workgroup, you can use network neighborhood to discover them, or on the XP machine go Start > Run > \\VistaMachine\Sharename or if they are in different workgroups: \\VistaIP\Sharename and vica versa on the Vista PC
Yah, I tried that first. Could see the Vista & vice versa but no internet on either... The above was the only way to get both - networked seeing all 3 & at least 1 web browsing.
Hmmmm, I think it might be something to do with the default gateway or some ish....
Holy, I din see the rest o your post, hol up, I'll try that =D...

Reason: Had to say Browse!!!!
Oh btw it does'nt say network one it's connected to, it says network 4, does that mean anything?
I don't even understand what you're saying here.
Do you have more than 1 network card? My Lappy's Nic comes up as Local Area Network 1, WLan as Local Area Network 2, etc I also run VMPlayer so I have a bunch of extra ones...it that what you've got?
Nah dude it says it's network 3 when I change my default to 192.168.0.1 & it says I'm on network 4 when I pin the default gateway as XP's ip address (when it's on obtain auto), either way everyone can talk except XP can't tap the internet when it's on anything but obtain auto, the same problem I had before when I tried that....
Omg, I getting so tired, lol, I wanna get this done so I can sleep.
Oh, I forgot to mention, I only have one LAN on the lappy.

from the vista machine open a browser and put in 72.14.253.104 for the url, if it gets to www.google.com then you have DNS issues. Simplest cludge method to fix DNS issues is to put the DNS ip that your modem is using when it connects to your ISP as your DNS server in the network configs. You can usually find the ISP's DNS on the status screen of the modem.

Its sounds like your switch and router are not in the same ip range, you should be able to change the ip address of the switch to match the router then assign addresses as mentioned earier, check the router ip it maybe 192.168.1.1 not 0.1
if you change the switch to 192.168.1.10
and your machines to 192.168.1.20\30
Hope this puts you on the right track
cheers

I am pretty sure you can't give a 'Switch' an IP (at least not the one he's likely to be using)
I've just re-read your post, it appears you have a ADSL Modem (not a ADSL Modem/Router) and a swtich. So strictly speaking, only 1 machine will be able to talk to the internet, although both 'might' get an IP via the ADSL modem (You didn't say if its a USB or Network modem)
What you can do is enable ICS (do a search on the forums or the web) which will make one of your PC's act as a router and share its network connection with the other PC, but remember, for your second PC to browse the web, the ICS enabled machine needs to be turned on and connected.
Example: Your XP PC is connected to the ADSL Modem (via USB or its own network port[you'll need 2 for this to work). So this is a direct connectio, no switches. Ensure you can browse the web.
Connect the XP PC's second Network port to the Switch, and connect the Vista Machine to the Switch. Set Vista to get its IP via DHCP. On the XP machine, go to Start > Network Places (Right Click) > Properties > Select Local Area Network (the connection going to the switch) (Right Click) > Properties > Advanced Tab > Enable Internet Connection Sharing
This will give your XP PC's second Network Port and IP if 192.168.0.1 and your Vista PC's network details will some something like: (and oyu can set them yourself if you like)
Theoretically this CAN be configured with 1 network card on the XP machine, but it involved 2 IP's on the 1 Nic, 1 DHCP assigned from the Internet and the other Statically assigned from ICS, but most current PC's will have the 2 you need.
Hope that does it for you, cause I've just run out of juice...

Thanks for the help, but the browser read as address not valid D=

Ok, I'll try this when I get the chance =(, the only problem is I don't have 2 network cards as the modem is only distributed via LAN. I'll find a way to get one & I'm sure that when I do the theory u just put forward sounds in order.
