Ethernet problems STILL

Howdy all, Well for a long time now i have connected to the net via usb, recently i bought a new laptop and still have my old laptop plus the desktop. The desktop is connect to the net via usb using a Optus supplied DSL302G ADSL Modem and i have a crossover cable going from the desktop to the laptop (new one now) So all is cool, i have the net on both pc's. Now with my new laptop i have wireless so i bought a wireless router and proceeded to connect everything but i could not connect to the net with ethernet. Contacted Optus numerous times with no help at all. As my son has started using laptops at school he wants to use my old one. No problem except i cannot get it connected to the net. After talking with a few people they all suggested it was the modem so i have bought a Netgear ADSL2 modem and STILL CANNOT CONNECT to the net
I get thru the whole setup on the disc for the modem but when it tries to connect............................it FAILS

Please help.
The desktop is running XP and the new laptop is running Vista Home Premium. The old laptop is also running XP but once i can get the other 2 setup i will be ok setting up the old lappy with a wireless card to the router (Belkin Wireless G Router)

Thanks in advance

Jas

Re: Ethernet problems STILL

Depends on the model you bought ?

If it is a modem\router, you would get rid of all other hardware and just use the netgear.

eg:
Phone point - Netgear - CAT5 cable to other computers.

Login to the modem and enter your ISP details, Reboot modem and computer and it " should " all work.. You Network adapter should already be set for auto IP and the modem should have DHcP turned on.

Re: Ethernet problems STILL

The new modem is just a modem, not a modem/router. I can log into the new modem, put in ISP details etc but still no go. When it tests the connection i et the CANNOT CONNECT error message. As soon as i go back to usb connection, no problem
i really want to get full use of my media pc and have xbox's in 2 or possibly 3 other rooms

Thanks

Re: Ethernet problems STILL

A good start with these problems is to check the ip addresses of all the devices

on PC's
start
run
CMD enter
ipconfig enter

Other devices
Start
run
CMD enter
ping and the ip address you think it is ie 192.168.0.1

They should all pretty much the same with only last number changing.

PM me if you want some more help

Re: Ethernet problems STILL

Basically all i want to do for now is to be able to connect the Desktop pc to the internet via ethernet rather than usb like it is now.

Connection Status:

Address type: Assigned by DHCP
I.P Address: 220.238.64.77
Subnet Mask: as always
Default Gateway: 220.238.64.77

Re: Ethernet problems STILL

There are quite a few posts on Whirlpool about how the DM111P will not connect to Optus DSLAMs.

yeah, everything till the password screen is the same but then i dont get the quick config stuff. I did try it just now and stuffed something up and had to ring Optus. Well they couldnt get it to work either and said it was my cable so i said i would try another cable on my new lappy with Vista. Well bugger me, she got it sorted. We had to give it an address rather than get one automatically but it is working on the new puter.
Now i feel like a dick about this bit but hey, i never said i knew alot
Anyway the lady (optus) reckons that i dont have a LAN card in the desktop thats why i cant connect from it ? i assumed where i plugged in my ethernet cable was the LAN card ? Am i wrong ? If so i need to get one so i can do what i want to do or maybe just get a wireless card for that.

Now for the next question If i unplug the ethernet cable from the back of my Wireless Lappy and plugged it into the Belkin Wireless Routers WAN port, would that allow me to be wireless ??

Thanks for everyones help

Can you give us a printscreen of device manager from the desktop machine?
