VGA quality over 10-15m

Hey guys.

Thanks to your help and some research i finally have all my components for my extender (minus the extender). Basically i now have dell 24" ultrasharp which i'm going to run off the vga output of my graphics card while a 40" 1080P samsung is used as the main tv off the DVI to HDMI.

Now my dell looks amazing with a regular vga but i have bought a $50 15m vga cord and when connected through that i get some interference/image quality loss.

It's most noticeable on text and especially noticeable when viewing a 1:1 pixel mapping test image - you can see the lines moving a bit. Video quality is still pretty good, but after seeing dell do 1920 x 1200 1:1 with a short cable i just wish it could do that with a long one.

Now is this amount of image loss to be expected over that distance, or have i bought a rubbish cable.

I might be able to reduce the distance to 10m if i don't wire it all up to beams underneath the house and cut across in a straight line. I'm thinking of going to dick smith and buying the most expensive 10m vga cable and seeing what that looks like. Any suggestions from the more experienced guys here???

please help quickly as i can still return the 15m ebay cable if i post it back within a few days.

Thanks in advance ppl.

Re: VGA quality over 10-15m

Eeewww!

$50.00 is waaaaaay too much for a VGA cable even a quality one. Should have posted first, anyway at 15m there should have been no interference BUT many video cards these days are outputting a very weak signal compared to a few years ago so you may need a VGA booster.

Here's a link to a supplier I use for all that kind of gear (VGA cables too!) I believe they sell the HQ vga leads for about the $20 mark in a 20m length.

Here's another way if you're good with your hands. You can DIY a cable using cat5 or shielded Cat6 cable.

I also read an archived thread from one of your locals who said the Cat5 did a great job, even better than a commercial one he bought.

Re: VGA quality over 10-15m

I've got a 15m VGA cable running to my projector. It is made from;

15 x 12 core shielded see here (if you get a cabling diagram you will find that 12 + a shield is sufficient despite it being a 15 pin connector)

2 x 15 pin D see here

and 2 x backsheels to make it pretty see here

around $50, perfect quality, run through to smallest of holes (ie only the size of the cable because you put the ends on later), never looked back.

Enjoy.

Re: VGA quality over 10-15m

I use Lindy for my long distance cables. Not the cheapest but I have never had a problem over 15m.

Re: VGA quality over 10-15m

Hi guys, well know that i've bought the 15m vga cable i'm looking at boosting the signal so it sends the 15m without any picture quality loss. I'd like anyones opinion on whether to buy from jaycar for 100 or another el-cheapo job on ebay for 30 bucks delivered.

I only plan on using this to boost my signal to the one monitor connected to vga (but who knows maybe down the line i might add another monitor).

Anyones thoughts

Re: VGA quality over 10-15m

Have you tried it without the booster? It may be that you don't need one.

Re: VGA quality over 10-15m

Yeah i've tried. I'm running a dell 24" ultrasharp at 1900 x 1200 and on text you can see the picture quality loss. When displaying a 1:1 pixel mapping you can see it shaking a bit on the screen, when viewing video it's not as bad but still there, and after dropping so much on the screen i want pefect image reproduction.
