Got Ping: No browsing!

Hi,

I bought MCE2005 this weekend & have been installing it since.

I have read the articles & done the search, but I cannot access the net from my client HTPC. I can ping both ways & down- & up-load both ways but my HTPC will not allow net access for EPG & updates. Can't setup internet connection within MCE.

I'm sure it has to do with my Zonealarm firewall but can't work it out. Anyone know of a guide written in easy-speak for setting up the correct parametes. I've done subnet for the LAN but don't know what to do from here. Thanks.

Re: Got Ping: No browsing!

Do you have an default gateway setup? can you ping outside your lan like ping microsoft.com ?

Also try putting an display to th HTPC, zonealarm puts an "popup" where you have to grant access to various services that should be allowed to connect to the internet.

I don't think I have a default gateway. I just used netwok connections setup home network wizard. I tried to ping the ip address of my ISP & it sent all four packets successfully. No ZA popups have appeared. What now? And thanks for your suggestion.

Re: Got Ping: No browsing!

How do you get an Ip address? If you have a adsl router you would normally click the assign ip address automatically (in tcpip propoerties).
So you shouldnt need to set subnet etc.
The only thing i used to put in zonealarm was a trusted range eg 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.255 (depends on the ip range you use). But this was only for connecting between pcs i think.
Why dont you temporarily disable zonealarm to see if it causing the problem.
coma.

Re: Got Ping: No browsing!

You haven't mentioned a router - are you using Internet Connection Sharing from one PC to your MCE? If so, I don't think the free version of Zone Alarm supports or is compliant with ICS.

I use command prompt>ipconfig to get my ip addresses.

I should have mentioned I am on dial-up. I won't touch broadaband in NZ until the a-hole telcos drop data capping. Sorry .

Thanks for that. I will try another product & see if that solves the issue.

Re: Got Ping: No browsing!

Thank all for your replies. It was indeed the Zonealarm free firewall causing the issue. I have unistalled it & set both host & client up with the OS firewall as a temporary measure.

I am updating my antivirus definitions on my HTPC as I write & am checking out firewall products.
