Wireless and wired router

Hello

I have a Netgear DG834GT router. Can I run wireless for my local LAN as well as plug in a CAT5 cable and connect my XBOX?
Or is it either one or the other?

Cheers
G

I don't mean to be rude brother but have you plugged it in to find out.

I can't see why not though it has got an onboard switch.

Re: Wireless and wired router

No offence taken,

Sometimes it takes a genius to point out the obvious

I haven't tried plugging it in

I will try when I get home. I don't recall seeing a switch on the router. I can access it remotely from work so I will check to see if there is a setting.

Cheers
G

Re: Wireless and wired router

Generally speaking these things operate side by side without any need to change any settings. That's because the first time you set up your network you have to be able to plug in direct. I have never had a wireless router that doesn't also feature a hub/switch and most have around 4 ports for cat5 cable connection.

Re: Wireless and wired router

Some routers have been known to have issues bridging the wireless & wired segments, but that's usually fixed via firmware updates. It's very rare for that to be an issue though.

If the X360 is to be run as a Media Center Extender, MS recommend that if you are using wireless, you should only use it at the X360 end & not the MCE end. But it's worth trying & seeing all the same.

Lightbulb Re: Wireless and wired router

No switch required at all.. Thw eireless will work from the box and will work at the same time as the LAN ports..

The DG834GT is a 108MB WiFI ADSL2 Modem with 4 10/100 LAN ports

You can connect via LAN and WiFi at the same time and no I would not use the WiFi with the MCE part of your 360 as streaming Video over it is like downloading a Linux distro over 33.6 K modem lines.

I have a laptop and Nintendo Wii conected to my DG834G ( same as the DG834GT but not 108mb only 54mb ) by Wireless

My MCE box and 360 are connected by the 10/100 LAN cables into the DG834G.

All work perfect together and all can see each other on the network if required.

If using WiFi I use the access list feature built into the Netgear DG834G series modems as it is a very sure way to make sure only your Wireless equipment is running off your Modem/Wifi AP.

** Dont be tricked into thinking that 108MB Wireless is faster than a 100mb CAT5 LAN connection either.. its not, packet sizes are different and Wireless connection are never exactly what they say.. a 108mb WiFi AP could still only give you a 54mb connection depending on cards used + distance etc etc..

If all else fails! plug it in and give it a shot I say!!

I don't know when XBOX are involved but with only computers you can use both, I have and use both on my home LAN.
I could almost bet my life on that it should work with XBOX to.

If you are going to stream HD quality the router may not be enough though.

Just by way of clarification... you're right, you don't need a switch because your router almost cetainly is also a switch. If I'm not mistaken, that's what you're plugging your lan cables into!

Re: Wireless and wired router

I recently got myself an xbox 360, I run 4 computers off my dsl connection for all 4 computers plugged into my billion adsl router. But I was stuck, I have an xbox 360 downstairs in the lounge room (split level), so grabbing a 15m cable to go downstairs to the xbox 360 was just not good enough for me. So I went wireless. I bought two Buffalo Air Station Turbo-G's, here's a detailed specific sheet, same place where I bought mine from -> http://www.clearnet.com.au/xcart/Buf...t-p-16761.html

Pre-flashed with a modified firmware, they give an example of the firmware used here -> http://www.clearnet.com.au/xcart/Rip.../index.asp.htm

So.. What I did, I set one up as the AP and connected it to my billion router via lan cable. I then put the second Buffalo unit downstairs and plugged it into the xbox 360. And it works like a charm. Streams media perfectly, getting a good signal, even though I had some interferance from other channels I bought myself a cheap pci wireless network adapter just to throw into the pc, and using the software net stumber, scanned the channels to find the one with the least amount of interferance. I set the second buffalo unit thats connected to the xbox 360 up as a client-bridge, so the ap and the client units were bridged together. I never had any congestion, and streaming divx, xvid, mpeg's etc from the pc through the xbox 360 is great. no network congestion what so ever.

I had a lot of headaches after buying the wireless adapter from microsoft for the xbox 360. I can tell you know, even though this adapter is dual band.. it's poop, constant network congestion, my thoughts is that it's more there for xbox live and not so much for streaming. I took back the device to harvey norman, got a refund on this adapter and kept with my two wireless buffalo-G routers, no problems ever.. Because the two units are bridged, I get strong connections of constant 54mbps, After viewing the summary of most of my avi (divx, xvid) movies and tv shows, I noticed they only require on average around 200kbps for the video stream and 200kbps for the audio stream. Meh, that's nothing.. So I stuck with my two buffalo wireless routers and I couldn't ask for anything better. As a matter of fact, it's worked so good, I went and bought another two more units and made a second AP and a second client bridge and connected my next door friend up with media center on their xbox 360. It blew me away again, the second two units were going through two double sided brick walls, over a fence, through two walls of plaster and wall studs. And spanned a distance of 35m.. Those other two units are getting a strong connection of around 34mbps, not quite 54mbps, but for what it has to go through, it's done damn good. As far as wireless and xbox 360 media extender's go, I can say these two wireless units I got are the best for the job in my opinion, and with the upgraded firmware, you can increase the mW (miliwatts) of the device to give it more juice, stronger signal, further distance. Mind you, i've been running all 4 of these units on default of 28 mW and they are still flawless.

Thought i'd edit and again make specific notification on what you need.

Two Buffalo pre-flashed wireless units. Set one up as the AP, and the other up as the Client-Bridge. Get a refund on that microsoft made xbox 360 wireless a/b/g wireless adapter.

After my recent success with Jerry at clearnet, he's doing a write up on these units and im getting some photos of my setup from my house to my next door's house, and a short write up myself. He's going to publish them soon.

*EDIT* - I'm at work at the moment, but I drew up a little plan of my current setup. Image below
