Crazy network setup..

Hello! I thought id post this up and see what you guys think..

I have a box running MCE2005 R2 that is connected to my Netgear DG834G WifI AP/ADSL2 modem by USB Wifi 54mb connection and that is all working fine.
The problem that Im getting is that I want to hook my Xbox360 upto this MCE box via 10/100 LAN and have the 360 connect to the net via this mce box's USB wifi adapter. ( Internet sharing is turned on, on the MCE2005 box )

When I go into the test Xbox 360 LIVE connection tab on the 360 it gets an IP addy but it fails to get a DNS server...

My DG834G is 192.168.0.1 the MCE2005 System is 192.168.0.3, if I manualy go into the Xbox360 and make its IP addy 192.168.0.4 and subnet 255.255.255.0 then shouldnt the dns server be 192.168.0.3? The mce box that is providing it net access?

Ahh Its starting to do my head in..

LoL

Any help would be good help!

Cheers guys.

Re: Crazy network setup..

Hi,

I don't have an Xbox 360 but do have a Xbox; Why does the Xbox 360 need to connect to internet via MCE, why can't it just connect through your router (either Wired or Wireless)?

You would get 1) Internet Connection 2) Network Connection to MCE

Regards,

Darren

Re: Crazy network setup..

Hi,

I'd try making the DNS server 192.168.0.1 (your router/gateway).
or you could manually enter DNS info on your PC and then point it to the PC (192.168.0.3)

Just guessing

Lester

Re: Crazy network setup..

I have a similar, if slightly inverted setup.

MCE cabled to DG834, and 360 on the wireless lan via a netgear wireless bridge. It picks up the DG834 as the DNS server (192.168.0.1) and works fine.

I do get a lot of performance problems watching video though, slightest interference and the picture stutters and the dreaded "Network Congestion" dialogue appears. In fact I've pretty much given up on it now, must get the place wired up properly.

If there's any way you can, stick to wires.

The router is in a different room thats why I conect the MCE2005 box via USBwifi so that IceTV can get the guide info, the 360 needs to be connected to the MCE2005 box via network cable so that it can streem the TV and have no lag within MCE on the 360.

Im tempted to buy a few 30m 10/100 CAT5 cables...

Re: Crazy network setup..

AlphA,

Have you tried bridging the wired and wireless connections on the MCE computer?

Go to network connections, select the wired and wireless connection simultaneously and right click the mouse.

Select "bridge connections".

Reboot both devices and see if that gives you the desired result.

Re: Crazy network setup..

Ok this is my network *note I took my time making this picture.. LoL..

Ive got

Netgear DG834G ADSL2+ Modem /router with 54mb WiFi - 192.168.0.1
P4 Download Box Connected by 10/100 CAT5 - 192.168.0.3
Centrino 1.7Ghz Laptop Connected by 54mb 802.11G - 192.168.0.4
Mozart MCE2005 Box Connected by LAN and Wifi - 192.168.0.5 <-- the LAN IP havent checked the WiFi IP addy.

Now If I unplug the USB WiFi adapter from the Mozart MCE2005 System and only leave the 10/100 LAN pluged in then the XBOX 360 will not detect the MCE System on the network and I cant use the extender features.... yet the 360 can go on the XBOX Live network and download demos play against other people etc etc..

If I unplug the LAN cable from the MCE2005 Box and leave just the WiFi pluged in the XBOX360 MCE extender works.. * Rather well infact.. a bit jumpy coz its only 54mm WiFi and only gets around 40mb connection.

What is extreeemly weird is I plug both the 10/100 LAN cable and WiFi pluged into the MCE2005 Mozart box and load up MCE Extender on the 360 the 360 connects to the Mozart MCE2005 Box and streams the Video / Live TV over the 10/100 LAN cable yet whilst doing this if I unplug the USB Wifi adapter the network is lost....

Im Ultra happy because its working and WAF is awesome.. she can play games, download funky XBOX360 arcade games and watch MCE without changing TV channels at all and with the one uttterly amazing XBOX360 system!

Microsoft I love your products, the MCE2005 System is awesome, The XBOX360 is fanfriggintastic but please..... tell me whats going on with my LAN.. LoL
